  1. I'm a user who transitioned out of Second Life to VR, although I still log in sometimes to reconnect with friends now. Here are what makes me log out of SL and into other games: 1. Lag. Lag in loading everything, rather than preloading a map and then teleporting in is a huge drawback for me. My FPS is something I care a lot now since I've moved into using VR with full-body, so everything that works abysmally is going to get the stinkeye from me. This is even when I have render limits of avatars at 20k--the lag simply doesn't stop and I get tired of it. 2. Lack of things to do. Things are a bit more dead around here than they used to be, but I still wander around. Stuff I enjoy are shopping events with original items. I also like going to art events. I thing the animesh horse/mount community is bigger and has more going for it than Second Life gives it credit for; I still feel the riding system for that is second only to Black Desert's horse system. 3. My friends aren't online and they're in VR instead. It tugs me back into VR and I'm like, "oh well, we'll hang out in SL later." Second Life has stuff that makes it fun; LL should lean into this when advertising. So what's fun about here? 1. It's an easier version of Daz3D. It just is. I hate Daz. I like taking pictures here more if I want realistic avatar imagery. 2. Your avatar is a piloted sim and that can be exploited to be very fun. I always said LL should advertise the "Sims-ish" side of Second Life more. My god, if this game were ported to mobile, it would be formidable. It would get another ten years tacked on to its lifespan! 3. Vehicles and battle sims. Second Life really shines at this, barring sim-crossing hiccups and loading everything on the road as you drive on Mainland. 4. Exploring digital spaces and getting lost. Mainland is a jewel for virtual world exploration. I seriously think this game should at least always stay online or accessible in read-only version so people can pan around and find all kinds of cool stuff, but that's just my opinion. That's my feedback! I hope the devs are listening in.
  2. Definitely AR them, OP. It's against ad farm rules for them to be doing that. Everyone has to play by the rules in SL, no matter what. People will always find a way to scam. Thanks for noting this happening.
  3. Slayyyter's probably the only other artist who could pull this off too. Put some barbie SL avatar in one of her videos and glam it up, because she is all about that "perfect" look. Dorian showed how to put SL in your MVs and make it look good and blend seamlessly. I don't think I've seen other musicians attempt this before. I remember when Kim K did it, but she doesn't make music.
  4. I think you can't, but if you look at the rabbit's body and prim head, yeah it is. This is so sad. Dorian's even been doing concerts in Second Life (with Club Cringe) to invite people here. Being attached to an adjacent PC Music hyperpop movement means they've been able to extend Second Life's name and brand to younger people who have never heard of this game, even going so far as to include some machinima in their video. Compounding that by adding Rebecca Black, it's bound to get views for the memes alone. Rebecca even rode in the backseat of a car like in her old "Friday" video! I saw someone mention on these forums a bit ago about trying to get Gen Z in this game. Dorian was one of the biggest chances of that happening. I think Strawberry got that when she interviewed Dorian, because I could hear her excitement when she was talking. Sadly, I don't think anyone else is catching on and this moment might just slip through the game's fingers. Everybody should be talking about this, from SL news sources to good ol' Drax. Where's the hype at?
  5. Yikes, guys... Dorian's kind of the biggest shoutout this game can get. A few years ago, SL would have been jubilant at this happening. It's so weird to me that Dorian being on Lab Gab got no noise at all and there's just crickets at this video.
  6. That old furry rabbit? Really? That thing's from like, 2007. lol. Plus the old dance it does is a super dead giveaway.
  7. Dorian Electra, a performer featured on Lab Gab recently, has published a new video featuring Rebecca Black and an animated Second Life character. The character features pretty prominently in the middle of the video, zooming right past Black before she begins to sing. I haven't seen anyone talk about this, but that's a pretty big shoutout to SL, so here you go: Dorian (pronouns they/them) is a hyperpop singer who is a chameleon with their appearances. They might look this way in this video, but guaranteed the next era they will look entirely different with a new character. This is the "gentlethem/edgelord" era for their new album.
  8. It really feels like that sometimes in SL, too. You have to look like a too-tanned suburban mom on her way to Applebees on a Tuesday night to get the point across that you're of legal age?? And it's like... Jesus Christ, how bad are some people at telling the ages of folks around here? This is why I feel like a lot of avatars do look like older moms who borrowed their niece's skimpy clothing for the night. I don't want to have to dress that way, honestly.
  9. She's a cutie! Yeah, I could see her being 21. Nowadays her makeup wouldn't be that different and she'd probably wear a boat hat with the dress.
  10. So based on this discussion, I've created a new tag for Flickr and blogs called #21challenge. You all should dress your avatars up to look 21, then upload your pics with that tag, and we can see with enough submissions just what everyone thinks someone of age (drinking and legal) looks like. This will probably give everyone a clearer picture of what's going on with consensus. Here's my entry, based on my impression of the e-girl fashion trend. What does a 21 year old look like to you?
  11. A lot of Millenial users trend younger with our looks. OP's picture to me, is reading as a woman in her mid-twenties. Someone in an older generation is not going to be as familiar with our fashion trends, and say something like "oh you're in your teens". I get it. Each generation has a different idea of what a teen is. Take my pic, for example, in my icon (edited: put in another pic for reference). Some people would say I look like a teenager. My avatar is almost six feet tall! She has extra height on her, but she has larger eyes because I like my avatars to be inspired by anime. My husband makes women who look older--which he technically is, himself. We both say the women we make are in their twenties. He's Generation X. I think this is a cautionary tale about how different generations of users see youth and youth fashion. What colors we wear, how big our eyes are, what our hottest stars are for our age, etc. Look at Instagram for examples of beauty for anyone after Gen X. Google "insta baddie". You'll get the trend: thick lashes, big lips, soft face shape... ...she looks like the girl in OP's picture. She is the picture of the girl of our virtual times. Keep in mind that there's hot babes for every decade, and that I could care not a bit for how old anyone actually is. This is about cross-generational dialogue. Just some food for thought.
  12. I'm not white, friend. I'm black! Everything you mentioned, I know. The world is trash. I was imbued with the awareness of how terrible it truly is, just by growing up. Contrary to popular belief, it's possible to be concerned about many things--the thing you see me pursue here doesn't imply I'm apathetic about anything else. I appreciate you attempting to educate someone like this, but we come from all walks of life here. Just wanted to address that even though it's been a minute. Thanks!
  13. Years ago, I started noticing a trend with SL and prepared any dev stuff I had done for a portfolio. I invested some time into a side career, aggressively pursuing work there.. and now I have some work away from SL that is my own. Because things can go either way, I suggest anyone who makes things in Second Life to get their portfolio together. Tech is changing and these games are all fighting for customers. Change will come again as new virtual worlds arrive (which they will, this year or next). You need to be ready to weather that storm. You don't need to leave SL for this, just have your bases covered. This is my prime advice right now. Things that seem solid can fall to ruins, and things that look like a pile of ash can return to a roaring fire. That is the way of social games right now.
  14. It can be hard to talk about prejudice and racism. Some people won't react with acceptance of this right away. You'll notice a typical response at first that's incredulous, angry, and trying to blame the source of what brought the subject out into the open (most often, a person trying to talk to you about it). It's usually a first step for that person's journey to changing. So if some people don't accept this now, don't worry. You sowed the seeds. They'll take root at some point later on. Also, please take care of yourselves. This subject can be emotionally draining. Self-care is necessary so you don't get burned out.
  15. I should probably step in and make a clarification and statement. Not giving that Youtuber views, but by the title... You don't have to support BLM the group through donations or anything, in order to agree with the statement "Black lives matter". If you tell someone "I don't support Black Lives Matter", you should clarify you mean the group and that you, of course, are not disagreeing with the sentiment that black lives matter. That's just the name of the group. There are other groups doing the same thing that you can support. What else can you do if you don't want to march or donate to the (group) BLM directly? Talk to people about racism. Talk to your racist relatives about racism and why it's wrong. We all have one. I just called out my parents for being racist, and I'm black. It's still wrong. We don't get a pass for that crap. Call out instances of racism in Second Life. There's a lot here. And it would be great to see the game not so stifling and obviously prejudice against minorities. People are doing their part to change here now, but you can help! See a skewed reality that treats minorities like we're a red light district in-game, or someone going around and calling dark-skinned avatars the n-word? Report or refuse to support. Those two things are powerful statements in this game. Speak with your votes! A prejudice politician is one who can't work fairly. There are lots of people waiting for a chance to do a better job. Be aware that once this wave of civil rights activism is over, it will gradually be replaced by classism. And that... is when the real dystopia begins. We're already seeing the beginnings of this so just don't be surprised, okay? Keeping racism around won't stop that, either. It's just that helping to eradicate racism a little more will pull that curtain back more, and come further into our country's consciousness.
  16. Ah, politically neutral. What a blessing to be, in such times. @Extrude Ragu The Stand For Justice fundraising site lists some other groups aside from BLM you can donate to, if you want. Just click a link and you can pick what you want. Or, choose one of the other options other people in this thread have provided for you.
  17. Oh wow thank you!! Well then I consider this thread complete, thanks to EVERYBODY for showing support, Dancien for the JIRA, and even showing love on posts. I appreciate it very much. Really, this means a lot to me!
  18. JIRA is for tracking bugs in Second Life. That's the first sentence stated on the website there. I don't believe it's supposed to be used to request policy changes. Which mole/Linden should we tag here for this issue? I don't even know where to begin with this. @Strawberry Linden? She actually helped with a fundraiser with the Orlando nightclub shooting back in the day. Maybe she might know who can help. All I know is that I'm black and I've been complaining about this for years. I blogged about it, New World Notes blogged about it, and nothing ever happened. I got tired, put out by how much racism I see in Second Life, and felt sometimes that this game simply didn't want people like me around at all. Then I started playing other games too. Then I saw a statement by a Linden talking about trying to bring users back. I'm an on-and-off player who would be happy if this game accepted her more. But can it really happen? EDIT: Dancien created a JIRA for it. I don't know if that'll work but it's out there now! https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-228854
  19. The world is changing and a lot of people don't want to mire themselves in places that make minorities feel unwelcome (myself included). Little by little, SL has changed for the better, but I still see racist slurs used as tags on Marketplace for various products. This should be stated in the TOS as being disallowed, so we can report items that return when you search these tags. Second Life should not be a place that operates on any facet of hate. Not even for the sake of "free speech". This isn't a country--it's a virtual world run by a corporation. Thank you for reading my suggestion.
  20. Hey OP, I like your decor! You did a good job. I especially like the knick-knacks by the row of flowers. It blends in with the house really well.
  21. Thought this was a gotcha post, but I logged in to a tornado. LOL it's real!
  22. Thanks dude. I don't expect my outlook to be accepted widely here, because I feel these forums are a place where people are focusing their anxiety and anger from other things in their lives right now. I just don't think it's okay to pass it on to the Linden staff like that. They have jobs and other stuff to take care of. But I think, sadly, this insight will become more prevalent as the disease spreads more and more through the population. We're going to really see what's important soon.
  23. Bruh, people out here dying of a disease in the real world and y'all are worried about when Linden Homes are going to release and getting mad at each other in a forum. Relax.
  24. There are too many other games vying for social attention right now, for this to carry on as it is in SL. For example--I have yet to find a Confederate flag in VRChat. Putting things like that up there get you reported really fast.
