  17. issues with Destination guide

Hi Liviiia, I'm sorry to hear that you had some issues with the Destination Guide suggestion submission form. As others on this thread have pointed out, the form is very specific re: the dimensions of the web-hosted photo and it will reject anything that does not match the correct (657 x 394) format (URL path should end in .jpg). For the image, it is also true that one of our criteria is that the image should be an inworld snapshot of the actual location. If the form becomes too problematic, then please feel free to email the editors directly so that we can help process your submission suggestion manually. Our email is editor -at- lindenlab.com...and we'll be happy to help! Best, Brett
  18. Need help (Destination guide suggestion)

Or, if you prefer, you can also add the correct SLurl in the open-ended Editor Notes field of the form and we'll take a look. Best, Brett

  20. Destination Guide Maintenance and Rules

Hi everyone I'm one of the editors at Linden Lab that works on the Destination Guide. To answer a few questions: We do a manual link integrity check about once a month of each listed location in the Destination Guide. It has been about five weeks since the last sweep and we are about 70% done with the current audit (which will be done tomorrow). Someone mentioned that about 50% of links are broken, but I only counted 17 in total so far I've found that many times venues go offline, but they also will move locations...so our audit will often include an updating of the SLurl link to the new, correct location. I'd agree that the manual integrity check is not the most efficient process and, as an editor, I've made a request internally at Linden Lab for development resources to better alert editors when a sim or parcel goes down. It would be great to be automatically notified or, better yet, have the venue automatically unpublish if it goes down so that there is never a time when a broken or misleading link is displayed to the public. We do respond to any notifications about bad links fairly quickly by email (editor-at-lindenlab.com), so please shoot us a note if there are any known issues so we can follow up. There's also a "Report conent" link on the detail page for each venue's entry on the web version of the Destination Guide. The upside of clicking and teleporting to 1,683 different locations in two days is that I get to see lots of cool places and I often discover new people and builds. The downside is that my fingers are quite sore from all the clicking. @WADE1 - You probably did spot one of our editors on the case. (Well, there are really only a couple of us... LOL). Or, maybe we were just checking out your cool pets @Ann and Argus - Your comments are definitely noted re: the Basic mode and the Destination Guide. I agree and hope to see some improvements on this soon so that those venues listed in Basic mode make better sense in the context of the Basic mode experience. @Phoebe - I just checked your venue on two different viewers and confirmed that the link is working. Not sure why you are getting an error - can you email me brett-at-lindenlab.com so that I can work with you directly to troubleshoot. If anyone wants to chat about any of the above or just to offer their ideas and feedback, I encourage you to attend the upcoming Events User Group meeting, held next Thursday (5/5) at 2 p.m. (Pacific). I've attended the last two User Group meetings and the Destination Guide is often one of the hot topics. The meeting is at: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Hanley/159/209/27 and there is a wiki page where anyone can add items to the agenda at: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Events_User_Group.

  22. Ten Photogenic Spots in Second Life

Second Life is a virtual world imagined and created by people just like you. And, while it's always fun to create, it's also rewarding to explore and appreciate the artistic beauty and architectural wonders created by others in the SL community. Inworld photography is one of the most popular hobbies inside Second Life and getting started is as easy as clicking a single button. In the SL Viewer's Advanced mode, just use the Snapshot button to take a picture. Then, you can then share it with friends on Facebook or post it on Flickr, where thousands of SL photographers have contributed over 1 ½ million unique images that document the beauty and quirkiness of SL. For some useful photography tips and tricks, check out this wiki page to help you get the best shots. Looking for great places to photograph? Watch this video to discover ten of our favorite picturesque spots to get you started. We've also put together a new Photo Hot Spots category in the Destination Guide that you can use to quickly visit each of the locations featured in the video. So, in no particular order, here are the ten featured Second Life spots that are perfect for practicing your snapshots: 1. INSILICO One of the longest running and most popular communities in Second Life is InSilico. This cyber-punk roleplay region is filled with hi-tech high-rises and hidden elements that make for excellent imagery. For anyone with an interest in showing off the absolute best of Second Life to your friends, this is THE place to snap and share. Visit InSilico Now >> 2. S.I.C. Another “Blade Runner”-esque region to roam is S.I.C. -- that stands for Science Innovation Company. By the looks of this place, you can just bet that there’s an elaborate back story to explore in this hi-tech, post-apocalyptic urban landscape. So, why not capture it in images? Scout out your shots by traveling the dark urban streets as you pass by flashing neon signs and battling bots. And, after the shoot, hang out at the cool little hamburger joint. Visit S.I.C. Now >> 3. PARALLEL WORLDS Yep. It’s a weird and wonderful world we live in--and even more so in Second Life. How can words alone explain the strange shapes and textures that you’ll find twisted throughout Parallel Worlds? This extraordinary experience by Claudia222 Jewell is the perfect place to practice your photography skills. Zoom in on one of the many gooey globs that float in the air as you glide from surreal spot to spot--some combining snakes and circuit boards. Is there supposed to be a hidden meaning here? Maybe or maybe not. Either way, you’ll not want to miss a single shot. Visit Parallel Worlds Now >> 4. ANTARCTIC STRONGHOLD If you can brave the blizzards, then you’ll get some fantastic photographs at the Antarctic Stronghold, a primary telehub for the Vanguard Armed Forces’ base in a remote, icy region of Second Life. There’s lots of shots to snap here, but be careful not to interrupt the combat roleplayers that frequent this popular spot. Visit the Antarctic Stronghold Now >> 5. INNSMOUTH Ready to travel back in time? Then, visit beautiful, historic Innsmouth--a troubled New England coastal town where darkness prevails and danger lurks around every corner. Be careful as you wander the rain-soaked streets as you snap spooky shots. Visit Innsmouth Now >> 6. ALIRIUM GARDENS Do you love secret gardens? If so, then you’ll want to get lost at Alirium, a relaxing place to immerse yourself in unspoiled beauty across all four seasons. As you wander through each garden area, you’ll stumble across shots that are just too good to pass up. Visit Alirium Gardens Now >> 7. LA PERLA II So, for your next spot, check out old Italy. La Perla II is a beautiful old Italian village with its own unique Mediterranean styles. Explore the shops and hillsides as you scour the village for just the right picture. Strike a pose on one of the cliff pathways to remember the moment as the Mediterranean sun sets behind you. Visit La Perla II Now >> 8. SAN FRANCISCO In this economy, traveling to some of the world’s greatest cities is out of reach for many of us. In Second Life, not so much. I know. Maybe it’s not exactly the same as the real thing, But, how can you resist traveling to San Francisco to see the Golden Gate bridge when it is just a mouse click away? Visit San Francisco Now >> 9. PARIS Or, visiting Paris to see the world famous Eiffel Tower? Visit Paris Now >> 10. GRAND CANYON What about walking the rocky edges of the Grand Canyon? You can even walk right off the edge. Just make sure to grab a good shot on your way down. Visit the Grand Canyon Now >> Of course, these ten spots are only the beginning. There’s so much more to explore. Check out the Destination Guide for even more photogenic hot spots. Special thanks to Torley Linden for his fantastic photographs!
  23. Finding Land in Second Life

Imagination will take you everywhere. But, in Second Life, finding a place to create and build isn't always so easy. In fact, it can even be a bit stressful if you aren't prepared or lack knowledge about how land works. Before you take the plunge to acquire your own land for a dream home, business, club or art project, it might be helpful to read what one independent blogger has to say about the process. Second Life resident Apollo Manga recently created a useful series of blog posts to address the various steps and potential pitfalls in acquiring land within Second Life. In his multi-part series for Examiner.com, Manga weighs the pros and cons of getting land on the "mainland" vs. a "private region." For example, did you know that you don’t have to be a paying Second Life member to acquire land in a private region? Also, it’s important to know the rules for any private region you acquire — they are published and viewable in the land’s associated “Covenant” (accessible by right-clicking the land, then selecting “About Land” and the “Covenant” tab). Manga also gives tips and tricks that will help you better use Second Life Search and the World Map to identify the best property for your needs. To read the full series of articles, check out "Buying your first Second Life land" on Examiner.com in these four parts: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Of course, there's also the official Linden Lab Land Buying FAQ, too. To get a feel for the types of property available in Second Life, you can browse listings on the Second Life Marketplace for mainland and private island locations.
  24. Spring Break in Second Life - Show Us Your Look!

Hi Tymus, We are reviewing all suggestions in the comments here and on Facebook...so we'll take a look at the SLurl link you provided as we start to curate our Spring Break promotions. We're still undecided on whether there will be a temporary "Spring Break" category for March/April or if we'll beef up our existing Beaches and some Music categories. If you want to submit using the existing form, then just classify it with whatever category you feel is most appropriate and we'll take a look. (You can even use the Editor's Notes field if you want to add more context...). Thanks!
  25. Spring Break in Second Life - Show Us Your Look!

Looks like we have a huge pro-Facebook crowd here As mentioned in the original blog post: "Share your favorites with us here OR on our Facebook page" To all the Facebook haters: Message heard loud and clear! From an editorial perspective, I'll take submissions any way you feel comfortable sharing. You definitely have a choice, as the editors are reviewing all Spring Break venue locations posted on this blog and, of course, Facebook. You can avoid Facebook altogether, if you prefer -- just post your favorite spot(s) here or e-mail editors directly using editor -at- lindenlab.com. The same applies for your Look of the Month submissions...just post the URL to your hosted image and we'll take a look. To Lisa Lowe: Yes, Feb. 6 is definitely early!! However, many of the promotional media elements are prepared about a month or so before they actually go live so we're trying to give everyone an early notice so that they can be considered for inclusion for when the newsletter is distributed in the spring. It's very cold (and, in fact, snowing) where I'm at, too!
