Oh , its all good. Mint sticks with an older kernel in the release for better compatibility with older hardware,  and they do offer an edge kernel for newer stuff in a separate iso but no need to reinstall your system. You can just pull the newer kernel in.  It's fairly straightforward, open your update manager, then go to view up top, then select linux kernels. You will get a message about the potential side effects of installing something newer, which is just a precaution, click through that, then  you should see a newer kernel listed under the 6.5 branch. Just click the top most, then select install on the dialogue box. Your previous kernel is still going to be there , but this is the pain free method and simplest and will update on its own without needing to add repositories as its coming straight from the default ones.

Before I get to involved I decided to just make a bootable USB and look at 21.3 edge for newer hardware. Made the USB and it would not boot, I have half a dozen bootable USB drives, distros – gparted – foxclone, and because this is the first time I have booted with a USB on my new system I tried booting with something that I know works, and it worked fine.

I verified the download and had no problems making the USB so I’m not sure what to think, I may try to rebuild the USB again later with a new download. But for now SL will just half to make do with what I have.

    Thanks for your input.

I have downloaded the mint 21.3 edge iso and will make a system disk to play with and see what happens.

I’m slow and my test system is still not back together after having everything moved out of the house for some work on the floors, but this sounds like fun, thanks for your input.

Try updating to a newer kernel for that hardware, I don't know how you managed to get it installed on one so old, so I am guessing you use something like Mint Linux. You can install the upstream Ubuntu kernel, the HWE kernel or even a third party, but well trusted one, like Liquorix which I use. For newer hardware like you have , you definitely want a 6 series kernel.  You should see a major jump in performance.

Yes, I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon 21, but you’ve bypassed my capabilities, LOL, I think you’ve gone to plaid.

For what ever its worth my update manager tells me my system is up to date, but I will do some reading, thanks for the input.

If you don't mind using a different viewer, and one that has a V1 like interface, Cool VL Viewer is currently the only SL/OS viewer that can fully shut off PBR and ALM without restarting. Just a suggestion. :)

Thanks, and I have that viewer installed. Have used it off and on over the years but Kokua is what I am comfortable with, I know where things are. Cool VL Viewer is nice but because I don’t use it often enough I have trouble finding things. But its a clean sharp display, and I do use it as a second viewer from time to time.

OK, this is a game changer, texture compression has made a world of difference. The jerky motion has stopped and things are looking better.

But, I must say, so far I am no fan of PBR, could do without that. But Kokua includes in the Environmental settings Mid-day (legacy) and that brings back SL as I know it and like it.

I have never been able to figure out the fancy lighting stuff so never use it. I imagine PBR will be the same for me.

    Thanks.

I will stop nitpicking your settings now I promise :P

You appear to be fixing my problems so please keep pointing out changes I can make, I’m floundering here without help.

LOL, I’m so bad at Second Life I have literally had people ask me, why are you still here. But I like SL even though I’m very poor at making it work right.

I’m going to need to take another look at the Kokua update and see if I can figure something out with that.

    Thanks again.

I changed the texture memory to 4096, that’s as high as it will go and going to a busy region its looking better.

Then I noticed there is an update to Kokua and I down loaded and updated. One of the problems is the texture memory settings have disappeared from the viewer, I can’t move, most of my surroundings are missing, there are blank squares of nothing, its... ugly as. I waited to see if it stabilized, nothing, then logged off and then logged back on, same thing, I’ve never seen anything like this. Logged off and back on to give it another go, still can’t move and still can’t see many things.

I’ve used Kokua since before it was Kokua and have never had a problem like this.

I’m going back to the older version of the viewer for now, I may be looking for a new viewer, I can’t do anything like this.

I’ve gone back to the older version of Kokua and Second Life is back, I can move and everything is there and the texture memory is set to 4096. I QUIT FOR NOW!!
    Thanks for you help Amelia.

OP should have no problem running SL with listed parts.
And I would say its overkill for SL, why...

I recently replaced my PC and I see little to no difference in SL, I increase my draw distance a little, sometimes, but still my FPS are not much different.
Listing old and new for comparison...
    CPU, Ryzen 7 1800X (AM4)  -   Ryzen 7 7700X (AM5)
    GPU, ASUS GTX 1060 3G   -   ASUS RTX 4060 8G
    Memory, both 32G
    Mainboard,
ASUS ROG STRIX B350-F   -   ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F
Viewer sets both systems one notch below ultra.

Mostly what I do in SL is go to live concerts, I still see avatars blink in and out of sight (at around 15m distance) with the new PC like I did with my old PC. Like I said, not much difference in how SL runs on the two systems.
I don’t know what difference it makes but I run Linux Mint Cinnamon 21

  10. When I buy any clothing I delete everything but the parts for my Tonic Fine, so that’s the only clothing I have.
I don’t build anything so I don’t have folders of building material and my Textures are rather limited.
I still have a some of my system clothing and I like appliers because of materials, and the fact that they fit under mesh clothing, both system and appliers are mostly lingerie.
I have some mesh hair but I never leave the house with it, I always use my flexi hair and I have used the same hair for years, its me, can’t help it.
After reading that you would think my inventory would be rather small but I’m around 97k and I’m fighting to keep below 100k. But I must be hoarding something just not sure what, LOL.

  11. I worked in an office once that had an all occasion tree. It would get decorated for everything.

The building had a strict police about Christmas Trees and spelled out when they had to come down.

The Fire Marshal came to the office and it was pointed out that the policy directly said Christmas Trees and that what we have is an all occasion tree. They thought for a second and said, it looks nice, just keep it safe and enjoy. That tree or another updated tree stayed up for years.

  12. I’ve been on SL for over 16 years and one thing you can’t deny is the avatars keep getting better and better.

RL quality is just an obvious progression and will come, I like the idea and look forward to it.

But in looks only, if I fall I don’t want to see blood and guts but the same as now, get up, brush myself off and keep going.

Having a realistic looking avatar... I like that.

  13. So, from the title of the video the right is PBR, I truly don’t know.

So for the record, is it as titled and the right is PBR?

Again I don’t know and to me its not clearly labeled.

But before I find out for sure I think the right looks better in the video, at least on my computer.

  14. Not sure how this is going to help but I brought up SL and popped open a PBR to see if it makes any difference. Maybe it will take two or three of them before it is noticeable. I’ll need to just wait and see how it goes.

  15.

I haven’t been to a sales event for a very long time. I have an older avatar and fewer and fewer stores are supporting it, still some are but not enough at events to make it worth my time going there.

I don’t build, I don’t have all that many textures so my 100k inventory is mostly clothing and I can probably out last Second Life with plenty of things to wear without buying anything new. But I still go shopping, I like new things, but shopping events are just a waist of my time.

  16.

I'm on Linux and the official SL Linux viewer does not work, last time I tried it anyhow.
Never tried firestorm, their Linux viewer is to complicated to install, I'm not a geek.
    I've used Kokua forever, and like Peanut told Jeff;
Once you go purple...you never go back!

Classic avatars can look VERY good.  The only place where I would say they really need a mesh enhancement is the feet and hands. This shortcoming was taken care of for a long time by SLink, who made popular mesh replacements for the feet and hands.  Sadly, they are now closed, and the best way to get nice feet and hands is to go all the way and get an entire Mesh body.

It has been years since I went mesh. Before that I used products that were not Sink but with them I could wear Slink shoes, not all but a vast majority of them would fit. And there were more than one other brands that sold similar products, and the cost was a fraction of Slink and looked good and Slink shoes fit.

I’m not going to go searching but I know several of them are still in business and I would guess still sell the feet and hands.

Its for that reason when I went mesh the avatar had to be able to use Slink shoes because by that time I already owned a large amount of shoes, as luck would have it the one mesh avatar I liked best has Slink compatible feet. Still have and only use that mesh avatar.

It would really help if there were some more stringent enforcement of proper tagging of MP items. Quite a number of shady creators add tags having nothing to do with their product or tags that they know would be somewhat misleading just to get more views. Personally, I'd like to see MP tag abuse result in suspension of all listings for that account for some amount of time. A few get hit with that and the rest would likely clean up their act.

That would be better than sliced bread! It would do a lot to fix the MP.

I am getting REALLY annoyed when vendors neglect to mention the difference between single color and fatpack versions of items.

I am NOT going to plump for a fatpack that's 5 - 8 times the price of a single because that's the only way of getting an assured outcome.

I am equally annoyed that we can't name and shame "brands" that pull this stunt. It's anti consumer, undermines trust in shopping and the platform in general. Consumers should have the right to know what they are getting before they pay and Linden Lab should be on the side of the consumer as negative shopping experiences hurt them far more than it hurts us.

Isn't not knowing what your buying call a gotcha? We still doing that?

  20. Shoes are one item I buy all the time, and all of them are Slink compatible, and I still see them being sold.

Well before my mesh body I used several third party feet that used Slink shoes so my inventory of shoes is extensive and many years old.

At this point I am so locked into clothing for Tonic Fine, with compatible feet for Slink, that if nothing is ever sold for them ever again I would be forced to live out of my inventory, with almost 100K geared to one body, changing is not an option, ever.

And so far I still manage to spend most of my Second Life allowance on clothing with no problem at all.

  21.

I saw this a few years ago (3 or 4 maybe) but it didn’t catch on back then, and I didn’t buy from them, to me it looked like a money grab because a lot of people use many different bodies.

I only use one body and buy fat packs if they are reasonable in price, most aren’t so I am happy with one color or pattern. And I do buy full permission items and texture them myself, I’m not all that good at it but for some odd reason they are the only times I have gotten comments about my clothes, I’m confused.

For now I’ll keep away from stores that sell like that, I still think of it as a money grab.

I think that is only part of the problem, creators can’t keep adding bodies to the lineup of what they rig for. And with people like me that refuse to change bodies no matte what, if they stop selling to me I stop buying all together.

I have almost 100K inventory and I can make different outfits till the cows come home without buying another stitch of new clothing. I would rather have new things to buy but if its not out there I can’t, I have one body and NO I’m not spending money on another one!!!!

Stop rigging for me and I stop buying, end of story.
