  1. Creators cannot DEMAND anything. They can report the review that the want removed. They have to follow rules about why it should be removed also. IF LL believes the review is against the rules then they will remove it.  LL is not going to cancel your account over a review :D.

I suggest listing the things that were not to your liking in list form being clear and precise.   AND REMEMBER that if you haven't seen a product you are taking a risk.  So part of the issue IS on you --- and you stated that :D.  I seldom buy anything without seeing it. You can always write to the creator BEFORE buying and ask to see a demo.  Better plan.

Thank you, only the desk and fedora are on the store. Not the hat stand, crime board etc. I'll fire him a message in world.

He seems to be "away" right now.   But he will no doubt  get them up soon.  The desk was an older item and discounted for the event.  Both hat stand and that impressive detective board are newish.    Good luck. They look great together. There is also a ceiling fan that would go well. :D

  3. Something is definitely "not right" in that problematic area. If you look carefully you can see that it is not smooth as it should be. We can't see that part from your photos but if you look closely at those vertices you may be able to find the problem. You could also -- if you cannot see the issue delete the faces that aren't working properly and start over.

I am a "box modeler" and I am guessing you built this in a different manner so beyond that I can't help :D

You have a lot of vertices that look like they are not connected . Those may be even more pronounced on the part that isn't showing up.

There has to be a better way.   I want to tile and keep resolution.  I am sitting in the camp of will release free updates as best practice evolves.

Haven't really been following this conversation closely (just the clippets that show up on the list) but I had to smile at the best practices comment.

We asked (well "I" and a few others) asked in SANSAR over and OVER again for a "best practices --- even o far as uploading of texture size (at one time you could upload a 4096 x 4096 png but it was down to 2048 when I arrived).  There was NEVER during my years there any info on best practices.

At least with the PBR they did worn folks to put on legacy textures for the 75 percent of folks that didn't have PBR yet.    Not everyone read, researched or listen though so we have some messiness.

While I have done lots of experiments I have no inclination to adopt PBR in my future builds but I might rethink that in a year.  I applaud those of you who are doing the alpha - beta (depending  on your point of view) testing.  LL as always needs some of the masses to actually test to see what is not working :D.

When you find your avatar gliding you have an AO conflict or an animation is not loading.

The Firestorm AO works well UNTIL... you have a second AO attached, its on/off state makes no difference, or some other attachment that adds animation.

When troubleshooting you need to know if only you see the avatar glide or is everyone see the avatar glide.

Unfortunately NOT my experience. I hadn't used an attached AO since the FS was included (what -- 8 years ago?) so that was not the issue. FS reported this issue and recalled the "latest" version and then put the fixed one up. Unfortunately that did NOT work for me.  Likely it worked for some folks or they wouldn't have called it fixed.  I am just waiting for the next update. Not a huge deal.

Hi, its been ages since I uploaded anything to flickr and I have completely forgotton what I used to do the editing can someone point me in the direction nothing too complicated.

    Thanks

IF you just want to crop and not do anything fancy there is likely a program installed on your computer to do that.  Double clicking on a screenshot graphic will likely take you to the default installed.   I use Corel which isn't terribly expensive if you buy the OUTGOING version rather than the newest release BUT while not as difficult as Photoshop there IS a learning curve.

I think there are also some online editors so doing a search for those --- depending on your needs -- might be a way to go.

If you're using Firestorm viewer, it has a built-in AO.  No notecards required.

    https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/animation_overrider

Agreed that is an easy way and I used it for years BUT the latest FS even after the rerelease has some major AO issues (like you can't WALK you just GLIDE so I am using the base AO that I had previously customized for that.

Along the way and on another note --- Not all animations start from the same "resting pose" so if you use different animations from different makers you will likely get some nasty glitches and hiccups.  Just a warning :D.

  8. I may have said this already but maybe on the other PBR thread. Not sure.

PBR IS the industry standard. So true.  BUT the games using PBR are (mostly at least) produced by a company with hired professional help. ALSO and more importantly those games have control of the game  environment (for the most part again).

In Sansar where we had PBR (I opted out and didn't use) it worked BECAUSE we controlled the atmosphere and lighting.  Visitors saw ONLY what individual creators wanted them to see and how we wanted them to see it.

These millions of creators issue (well a lot anyway) has been problematic historically. When materials (the old ones of normal specular etc) came on there was the same problem. Things looked good in SOME lighting and horrid in others.     So once again people have to adjust to something that works for them.

I agree that buying a no mod PBR item without seeing it inworld at least  could cause major disappointment.  AND at the moment the adjustments that people are supposed to be able to make really aren't working anyway.

And therein lies the problem.  Each creator will build their creations with their own EEP settings.  Not the ones I use or the ones you use or the ones anyone else uses.  But I don't like the one they use?

While some creators are jumping on this bandwagon and then including THEIR EEP settings so you can see how their creation is intended to look, I think they're going to find out that down the line, people will not be buying as much when there are 374839 items in their home and each requires a different EEP to look good.   How the heck does that seem like a good idea?

And "thus" I perceive a problem and have from the beginning.  Most of the creators I chat with are either waiting to see OR making a PBR items along side their regular items.  And some, like me, don't plan on implementing at all.  As long as your current items look good under PBR  then --- as long as you are happy with your workflow --- why change?  Honestly some of the PBR items made by the creators doing both versions do not look as good (to me) as the legacy baked and painted textures we have had for many years -- and they agree.

So there MAY not be much of a change overall.   We will see.

This last statement confused me a bit. Do you mean the existing items you already purchased will look worse?

And NO, as I said in that post most (not all) items look better (to me) under PBR.   That is the GOOD news and thankfully LL figured that out as a main criteria it seems.

    ******************************************

OK. So realistically almost anyone can "make" mesh items under PBR. You buy raw mesh from the Marketplace (or inworld) and you buy PBR readymade materials. All good.  You play and create and make something.  This is not "original mesh" by any means although that term itself has been diluted with all the purchased and downloaded mesh these days.

That is a "good" thing as folks get to create and enjoy the process. On the downside just like the (shall I say hundreds) of template clothes out there that simply have the raw mesh tinted in various colors -- it REALLY "creation" (in my book anyway   But the more and more products are not NOT original showing up (and indeed in oh so many "Original Mesh" venues these days) it is somewhat depressing to those that actually do the work.  It takes many many hours to actually MAKE a good quality mesh item.  People still doing that (happily there are som) are getting paid pennies.

When the Market gets even more flooded with --- I am not sure what the term might be really but thing where folks just slapped on a good looking PBR texture to a purchased mesh object it is honestly kind of depressing.  I am worried that some of our actual CREATORS will just throw up their hands and exit the building.

With the little money most (not all of course) creators make and the fees they pay to get those game tokens inworld --- it really is a wonder that folks are sticking around.  I am worried that the ease of PBR "creation" may be the last straw.

I am not doing much these days while three or so years ago before the gacha ban I was making mesh every day.  I am still HERE but I am not really doing much. I have watched some of my favorite creators go the same route.  Happily there are a few new folks filing in the gap (for me anyway) or I would never have anything to blog about LOL.

Hope that is more clear now.

  11. I have only been seeing the snippets of the posts here not following the whole conversation.

AND I did a lot of experiments with PBR.

    AND talked to other creators.

I think the bottom line is that many things we have now (including my baked mesh objects) look "better" under PBR lighting. That of course depends on the person's point of view and aesthetics.

The big issue seems to be the reflection probes (which I agree the current method sucks).

The bottom line is that no one MUST buy into the new PBR era. It will come whether there are cheers or raised fists, but for a vast majority of items already made the world will just look a bit different.

I am not sure just how many people really CARE about realistic reflections on their shiny vases etc.  It is not at the top of my priority list of wants.

It WILL give those who don't want to fiddle with graphics programs a way to make (that should likely be in quotes) items much like 18 years ago or so when the prim and 256 textures made the world that we saw.

I believe in creativity so from that standpoint I am happy.  I think overall it will dilute the quality of purchased items and that is NOT something I want to see.

  12. That is a fairly complex question and the "best" answer would be "start with something simpler" and then work up to what you have there.

    image.thumb.png.70e09a218dd5caf21322fd04901ec6f8.png

In general you will want to think about the different MATERIALS that will be part of your object -- so bottom base, glass, top base and likely one or more trim colors.  You can only have EIGHT materials per object in SL so think about that also.  Sometimes you can let Blender unwrap for you and it works (not all that often but sometimes). This is NOT a case for that. You you need to mark the edges where you want to divide the mapping.  I did a messy job giving you some ideas.

It is also important to knw in THIS case that the outside of the glass and the inside of the glass needs to be two different materials or you will have some nasty issue.

Honestly, if you haven't mapped before this is likely a nightmare and I do suggest that you make something simple and learn a bit at a time. Most people dislike mapping.  I really like it -- its a puzzle thing. There are plenty  of tricks to learn along the way but not really all in one day.

I am going to look up my tutorial (there are a few) that explain the ideas about mapping.  These are in the OLD INTERFACE so just pay attention to the ideas behind what is going on.  I have no idea how things may have changed in he current interface --- I am still using the old one :D.

Maybe you can look though the playlist towards the beginning (or just start at the beginning - they are short) and figure out some of what you need to know.

Hey I have some problems with the American Cancer Society (too much support of Big Pharma and not enough support for less lucrative treatments) but you guys need to do some simple googling before having a misplaced activist episode:

American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® communities offer a home away from home for people facing cancer and their caregivers when cancer treatment is far away.

What is a Hope Lodge community?

Our 30+ Hope Lodge communities across the country provide a free place to stay during treatment so people with cancer can focus on getting better. These communities provide comfortable guest suites with private baths, as well as inviting spaces with all the comforts of home, including a communal kitchen, dining area, laundry rooms, and places to gather or find a quiet respite – all at no cost to guests.

Hope Lodge guests don’t just find a place to stay – they find a community of support and an emotional connection with others facing the same journey.

    https://www.cancer.org/support-programs-and-services/patient-lodging/hope-lodge.html

I did know all that. My point was (and for others) RFL and  event owners didn't ASK the folks that had ALREADY "donated"  hefty booth fees plus making donation items that payments  all went to RFL ----- if the money we gave could go to this hotel in Africa when we thought we were donating to folks at "home".

I have nothing against Africa or any other country (and I do many any other country as it is not the citizens that start the wars in my book -- people are people I have found) but that RFL changed where the money was going after the fact. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.  If folks CHOOSE to support that type of work then great, but some of us like to know what the money we are giving is going to.

"why is the Linden Viewer using bandwidth when it is not being used?"

    ..Trick question, right?

Nope. I HAD used it in my testing of PBR.  I just didn't understand what those numbers meant.  So MUCH smarter now!

Meanwhile has anyone used a hotspot (yes I know that is not a direct connection) successfully with SL.  I did on my notebook (not all that fancy) to pay my rent when the power was out but it was hard going. My desktop isn't connected to wi-fi.   Just wondering.

My ISP which USED to be top notch for decades is NOT doing well on so many levels including price.  THEY know it too but I don't foresee any great changes so wondering.

People should really read this and then decide for themselves about ACS and RFL: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/nobody-should-support-relay-life

I and many other creators gave up supporting when after paying (the spots are not free)  and making donation items (I never minded that part at all) the participants found out the the money was going to build a hotel in Africa.  We were not ASKED f we wanted to support building a hotel in Africa.   This is not my idea of good use of money and yes many many charities are not really charities at all.

I lived in New Mexico for awhile and once a year the fire department (volunteer in part) had a fund raising and the firemen would take trucks out to shopping center parking lots  You could donate DIRECTLY to them. I always donated and always gave cash so that if the fireman in question wanted to take it home and buy groceries or whatever at least I knew it was going to a FIREMAN :D

Linden Lab has always been supportive of RFL events -- taking part, giving talks, letting the sims stay  up longer than their originally slated time; but in the past anyway the events were always privately run.  I don't really know anything about this new one (last year was the first I believe when the person that ran the H and G RFL Home Expo decided to stop).

PS. It MAY be (no idea just guessing) that the websites that usually list events have policies about not listing charity events. Hence not much coverage. I am trying to remember if I have ever seen any (non-paid) advertisements at the prominent listing sites.  There WAS more coverage last year as I remember but I think it was basically through the official LL blog.  A little fuzzy on that so only conjecture.

Oh really? I've always just maxed those out (and wondered why we can't set them even higher) thinking more cache means more better...

I'd love to know the reason why that isn't the case

Note somewhere in this thread said that at least the ALPHA FS viewer settings are recommended maxed (or something like that maybe you found the note).  Best really to ask on the FS inworld group.  I have no idea when or why that changed.

  17. If it is balls that are linked you can EDIT LINKED in the build menu and move one ball away from the other.  If it is an AVsitter with menu then you should be able (each person) to adjust the placement via the menu and that "should" come up when you sit.  So far as platform things I am not sure.   Note that even after adjusting the poses or animations there is no guarantee that the poses will work for YOUR avatar(s).   That is all a body skeletal thing and will differ from avatar to avatar.  You can sometimes cheat a bit and then take photos from certain angles.

Don't forget that most bodies let you change hand poses and that can be very helpful too. Good luck.

PS If it is a pose ball situation you can edit the ball WHILE the avatar is on it. The ball will go invisible but you can see it by using Ctrl + Alt +T.

  18. Yes realize that. Over 16 now and on the Marketplace since almost the beginning but this is unpresidented for me in all that time. Still happening this morning when I logged in. Just seeks like "something" has changed.  No advertising from me or new products or any changes that "I" made in the backend.

  19. I sold more on the Marketplace today than I have on a single day in MANY months. Lots of little items and one big one and some in the middle.  It is the end of the month in the middle of the week and I see no obvious reason for this other than some of the Marketplace issue finally got fixed.

Anyone else notice anything?  Whatever, I hope it continues.

I'm using an ethernet. No packet loss and a solid, non-fluctuating ping.

    --------------------

I'm wondering what I could change in my system to make it so I can run SL on max settings, have fast loading assets (or at least as fast as they could go with server limitations,) and decent FPS. Is it just that I need high VRAM (a better GPU,) fast and 16gb+ ram, and a CPU with much better single-core performance?

Beyond my tetchiness quotient.  Here are my stats. My ISP connection is WAAAAAAY below yours so that isn't it.  And I get great FPS (probably not in London but other places).  You SHOULD TEST other places besides LONDON which is known as a dragfest BTW.

Note there is something fairly wonky with the current FS.  BESIDES the AO still not working --- that is. It keeps changing my settings.  No clue.

I have no issues except the recent slow loading avatars (body parts floating in air etc.)  190 fps at the moment. Me and kitty and trees and such on a pad in the sky so not much going on really.
