Ah, you mean this kind of rezzing... the appearance of the existing objects when you teleport to the sim, right? I was talking about rezzing a new object from inventory. This kind of rezzing happens in-world immediately, but definitely takes some time to appear back on viewer's screen (after loading mesh, textures etc).

🙂 Now there isn't much beyond notifications and some additional caching of 3D objects and textures. However, I’m proud that one can log in to Second Life with SpeedLight from any device and enjoy a consistent experience. As I mentioned before, SpeedLight was originally designed as a desktop Second Life viewer that ran in a browser, with the unique feature of keeping your avatar online even after closing the browser — though it was still primarily desktop-focused. The mobile features we added include a specialized layout for phones, touch support, the ability to install it as an app from Google Play or the App Store, and notifications (which work slightly differently compared to the browser version).
-
I was simply pointing out that when given a choice, 75% of users choose to access via mobile. Initially, when SpeedLight launched back in 2020, it was designed as a desktop browser viewer. We didn’t have a mobile version or any app at all. However, due to strong user demand for mobile functionality, we added mobile features.

This is what I mean. Currently all HUDs expect to reside on a large landscape screen. Creators need to adapt them (increase button and text sizes, consider portrait screen). Excellent idea! This is what we are experimenting with (SpeedLight has no support of HUD devices yet). On one hand, this approach solves the problem. On the other hand, users expect HUD to be Head-Up-Display, not a "separate control panel". What if @Linden Lab join our discussion? HUD devices support is a 2nd popular request in SpeedLight wishlist (after 100% reliable avatar rendering).

Sorry, I have not explained. "390x844" by Google Analytics is not a physical device resolution. It is a "virtual pixel" screen size. For example, iPhone 14 Pro Max has 430x932 virtual resolution reported (with 2796 x 1290 actual screen). What I'm saying is that screen is portrait. And even modern devices are much smaller than any desktop screen.

I was recently responding to a related topic here and decided to pull some technical statistics from our SpeedLight Viewer Google Analytics. Among the data, the screen sizes particularly caught my attention (don't pay much attention to "low resolution", it is "virtual pixels" size): As experienced Second Life creators, we've become accustomed to designing for large landscape screens. We assume the screen is wide and spacious, making HUD devices clearly visible and easily distributed across the screen width. However, when you look at the most common screen proportions today, you'll notice that many users are now using portrait screens. This change means that the HUDs typically placed side-by-side may overlap or clash with each other. Additionally, the buttons and captions on these HUDs can appear quite small on mobile screens. With an increasing number of users accessing Second Life from mobile devices, it's essential for creators to completely rethink their approach to HUD design! UPD: the resolutions above are not physical (pixel) screen resolutions. It is a virtual values reported by Google Analytics. For example, iPhone 14 reports 430x932 virtual size.

Laptops are desktop devices here (because you can put your laptop on your desktop!). Mobile devices are phones and tablets (including Microsoft Surface and large iPads). Yes, those statistics do come from SpeedLight. Unfortunately, I don't have access to such detailed data for the entire Second Life platform, just surveys. However, the share of mobile users is definitely increasing. About three years ago, it was around 50%, and now it has grown to over 75%. Even with SpeedLight available on desktop, many people still prefer accessing it from mobile devices. Interestingly, a significant number of users still opt to use SpeedLight on desktop mainly to "check IMs," as it's quicker to open an extra Chrome tab than to launch a full-scale viewer. I believe the rise in mobile usage is a positive trend. While some users will continue to create content (like building or scripting) on desktop, the majority of residents are enjoying Second Life on the go, relaxing on a sofa, or similar settings.

More than 75% of the users access Second Life from mobile at the moment. Today's screenshot from Google Analytics: I believe that our desktop share is high because SpeedLight viewer is cross-platform. A lot of users login from mobile, keep avatar online and access online avatar from desktop from time to time. Taking the fact that SpeedLight is targeted to seamless online presence (online for days) and messaging, I believe that mobile share of residents looking for 3D entertainment is >90%.

The rez stuff is in "Build" menu of 3D view when you tap somewhere (see attachment). However, I just tried and submenu does not pop up sometimes. Checking with developers, will get back to you asap!

SpeedLight mostly concentrate on messaging and seamless usage experience: you can login on mobile, send IMs, turn off the phone. Then open SpeedLight on desktop and continue IM'g. I really appreciate your feedback when you manage to try SpeedLight

Hello Imaze. Have you tried our SpeedLight mobile SL viewer before? You wrote a great SL mobile viewer experience feedback, I wonder if SpeedLight would suit your needs. And appreciate your experience too!

SpeedLight does not support music streaming yet. We are working on voice and music support but it tends to be very complicated (especially regarding voice). SpeedLight is the most advanced Second Live viewer on iOS at the moment

TL;DR: We're experimenting with removing the online time limitation for all users. Feel free to login with SpeedLight, engage in your usual Second Life activities, and help us test our server capacity. Your feedback on missing features is welcome, except for voice support, which we plan to release later this month. Details Here at SpeedLight, we're excited to push the boundaries of our server capabilities and accommodate a larger number of residents online. Currently, we have successfully handled thousands of users and are eager to take it further. I kindly invite you to participate in our experiment by logging into Second Life using SpeedLight and carrying out your regular activities, such as IMing, exploring in 3D, and managing your virtual endeavors: In browser: https://speedlight.io Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/speedlight/id1519467733 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.speedlight.viewer Your input is highly valuable to us. I appreciate any comments or suggestions regarding missing features (except for voice support, as we have plans to release a preview version later this month). Thank you for participating! Your contribution is greatly appreciated. ^_^

There's a bunch of various reasons actually: For me the reason is to : Access Second Life from anywhere (mostly IMs and payments, 3D from time to time) Access it really fast: without looking for PC, launching desktop client, logging in. Mobile app usually starts faster than a desktop SL viewer.

Your mobile Second Life expectations and demands
Glaznah Gassner replied to Glaznah Gassner's topic in Mobile
Oh, voice! I forgot about the voice. It is very important. Second Life uses an extremely complicated approach. However, we have some ideas how to make it working, trying to develop a working prototype.- 18 replies

I would like to ask what are the mobile features you expect most of all? Not related to any viewer, just what you personally want to do on mobile. Few options to choose from follow, feel free to copy, rearrange or add your own. Multiple options can be selected indeed: Be able to react on IMs and group chats as fast as possible Use mobile viewer as a messenger app Stay online so avatar stays in a specific location (store, home) Build, adjust or edit in-world objects (or even edit LSL scripts) Travel in Second Life from mobile, visit various locations I believe this short survey could be helpful for all SL creators and developers. And may be determine new ways of mobile SL experience! 🤓

Can you please IM me? To avoid flooding in this thread.

Please check the latest version (released yesterday, will update automatically). It solves exactly your issue: meshes now load in high resolution.
-
The app uses the same assets as web version, so you can use both. App works slightly faster tho plus saves battery. We significantly update SpeedLight every month so there's definitely a lot of changes. The most significant updates of last month are high-resolution 3D, support of all avatars rendering (by request tho, we don't load avatars by default), avatar animations. In-world object payments and typing notifications update was just released. Discord update channel: https://discord.com/channels/533240770728034305/652176470994845729

The mobile SL app announced by LL about 3 years ago (it was never launched as far as I know) was working exactly this way: agent connected to the network without an avatar presence on any sim. Basically, it would be a simple IM client. From my experience with SpeedLight viewer nobody wants a bare IM/chat client. At the very beginning of SpeedLight it was a business-targeted chat client without 3D world support. We had to develop a full-scale 3D engine. 3D is essential (including SL business owners). 3D allows user to actually feel the presence in a virtual world: walk, stand, pay to in-world objects, feel people wandering around.
