  3. Second Life is getting some new, exciting features that will make the world look even better. Mirrors are arriving soon! While we love the realistic reflections PBR materials enable, mirrors take reflections to a whole new level. You can create a mirror using a method similar to reflection probes, but with a twist -- when a reflection probe is set to use the “Mirror” option, all surfaces near the probe will exhibit a real-time mirror reflection, including PBR and legacy materials. We chose this method to enable maximum flexibility. For example, you can create a big wall of mirrors and have minimal performance impact regardless of how many mirrors are on that wall. As long as they’re aligned with the mirror reflection probe, they can all show a mirror reflection. To conserve performance, mirrors are subject to some limitations. The Viewer will show the effect of only one mirror reflection probe at a time -- the one closest to your camera. Mirrors are planar, so they won’t work very well on the body of a car, for example. Like so many good things in life, mirrors are best enjoyed in moderation. Applying PBR materials to terrain will be possible in the upcoming featurettes release. You will soon be able to apply most GLTF materials to terrain. Initially, PBR terrain will support normal maps and metallic-roughness maps. Emissive textures will not be visible on some machines and transparent materials are not fully supported. We expect PBR materials on terrain to vastly improve the beauty of SL -- because there’s a lot of terrain out there! PBR terrain uses triplanar mapping, a texture-mapping technique which is new to Second Life. On steep slopes you will notice far less texture-stretching. To conserve performance, triplanar mapping will be enabled only when the graphics quality setting is set to “High” or greater. With the advances in GLTF PBR Materials and upcoming Terrain materials, we know it is time to increase the texture size limit to 2K (2048x2048 pixels). We are approaching this change carefully, and are still weighing pricing options for images larger than the current max size. 2K textures will allow artists to add significantly more detail to their creations and do things like efficiently consolidate more UV surface area onto a single asset. Mirrors and PBR Terrain will be available on the Beta Grid (Aditi) to start with, on the following regions: Rumpus Room 2048 Rumpus Room 2049 Rumpus Room 2050 Rumpus Room 2051 Interested in trying out these new features? You can download the Viewer here. Never accessed the Beta Grid before? Here’s information on how to access the Second Life Beta Grid: https://lindenlab.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/31000156725-accessing-aditi We can’t wait to see what fun and exciting new things residents create with these featurettes!

  6. That point should be BEFORE the first release IMHO. The new users are used to get it all and to get it instantly, not after 5 more years. The mobile viewer will have to be an instant hit, or all the programming efforts were for nothing. People these days are used to have more than only a stick to play with.

  7. Okay, I admit: if you have land, you may think you're done, but you never are. Because every day, you might get a new idea or adjust your old ones. Or you see bumps that you didn't notice before. For instance, I had first decided to close the back door of the café because there was no place (and no prim) to make a back garden. So I 'bricked up' the wall. But it still didn't sit well with me. Then I started scraping all the prims together by linking objects, looking in every nook and cranny to see if there were unusable objects that could go into inventory. This way, I was able to create a small courtyard after all. An 'achterommetje' as we say in the Netherlands. An alley leading to it with a small gate. And then I suddenly thought of the Utrecht gable stones. You have lots of them here. With pictures on them. Even around the corner where I live. There is a gablestone with a unicorn above a small gate. When I walk past that, I'm almost home. If I walk past the unicorn that's the signal for me to grab the house keys. So that unicorn had to be above the gate in canal city. I took a picture, Photoshopped some and placed it on a prim above the gate. Voila. I feel a little more at home again!

  9. (Black hole) Actually, that was Meta. I cannot imagine how Meta spent over US$36 billion on their metaverse and produced so little. When LL made a big mistake, they produced Sansar, which looked good and worked OK. It just wasn't something anybody wanted. I'm looking forward to seeing how LL markets SL on mobile. Apparently they can make it work technically, but onboarding has to be drastically simplified and the user's first hour has to be a lot better, or it's going to be a niche thing for existing SL users who want to log in on the go.

  10. I've worn both bodies, Legacy Classic and now Reborn, and while I like Legacy, I prefer Reborn. It is a much simpler body and hud. I prefer a slimmer shape and was able to find deformers that helped reduce the large behind. I am wearing the rvn - my body reflection - reborn version deformers (middle body form - v4 and butt form - v6 linked together as one attachment) and the eBODY - REBORN Deformer - Nadu knee fix. I don't use any other Reborn attachments like the waifus as I prefer a smaller chest. I really like this body because it can be slim with just a bit of curve to it. I recommend Reborn if you like a slightly curvy slim shape.

  12. Things are picking up in metaverse land. Now that the NFT clown car has crashed, and Meta/Horizon has peaked, the people who were quietly plugging along are starting to show things. There's M2. This is based on the Improbable back end, and, I think, Unity graphics. It's a real metaverse, in that multiple users can create in the same space. It exists as a tech demo, and you can request a free account. Requires a Google or, I think, Facebook account to identify you. Philip Rosedale is on M2's board. M2/Improbable continues to lose money, yet continues to attract venture capital. Disney recently put US$1.5 billion into Epic's metaverse project. It's not clear yet what that means. It will involve a large number of Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm/Pixar licensed characters. Readyverse has the rights to Ready Player One and is making something based on that. They have a demo video of what looks like Aech's Garage from Sansar and a MMO which supposedly looks like the driving game in Ready Player One. You can request a test account. VRChat continues to grow, slowly but steadily. 30,748 users on line right now. They're still a little behind Second Life, but may pass us in the next year. Roblox is still losing money, but has a lot of it left, and has a huge user base, average age still stuck around age 14 or so. So those are some of the major players.

  14. Or,.it's only a bun or ponytail attachment with a hairbase. I'll only buy one store's hair if it's on the weekend sales. I can do one color for 60L.

  20. There is no need to assign metadata. All LL need to do is make it so that MP delivers stuff from MP directly to the inventory into MP categories (when they are actually sorted correctly which will never happen) that objects sold are already assigned to on MP. They also need to get rid of the whole, rez a box, attach a hud, add an object, etc delivery methods and have the items delivered directly into a folder system without the need for the end user to open a box. Second Life is one of, if not the only, game/software platform that delivers items in 6 or so different ways instead of just delivering what you bought separately in a folder (which is possible on MP). We already have the received Items folder where MP delivers to. There is no reason why this folder/section cant be made with folders based on MP category sorting and everything delivered by that method goes into those folders in received items. Make that section the default with the option to switch to the old inventory for older users or those that want to use it. At the very least it will allow people to categorise their inventory based on a decent (when correct) MP structure and easily allow them to create folders in the inventory to match. Lastly, they then just need to introduce a 'save to' function for inworld purchases so that if a purchase is made not using MP then a 'save to' window appears where a person can save to the folder they want. We already have the system made like that with Landmarks, so wouldn't be a stretch to create a similar system. (Kind of off topic however also relevant if the MP categories are to be used as a filtering system for the inventory per my reply to Persephone above). That isn't a case of the creators fault (though they get the blame most times) but Linden Lab's fault for not offering more or clearer categories (and not managing them) and plain and simply LL's own stupidity. For example, having Avatar Accessories, Avatar Components and Avatar Appearance categories instead of just the category AVATAR and then sub folders. Of which the Appearance category was left after adding the other categories later because (not my words but a Lindens) they couldn't be bothered transferring the items from the old category to the new ones. So now we have a main category with a mere 2118 items which, apparently is still to many for them to simply recategorise those items manually and delete the unnecessary main category. Then there is the fact that the categories just aren't labelled right from the get go. For example, a person in the inventory has the system folder BODY PARTS and CLOTHING yet for some brain dead reason Linden Lab call the category on MP Avatar Components and Apparel respectively. Then for 'reasons', LL, even after 15 years of having mesh heads and bodies (and other body parts), still don't have a subcategory for those items so it is left for the creator to try and work out what is the best category to assign them. But then why stop with the ridiculousness there. Even though they have Avatar Components as a category they have the categories of Hair, Adult parts and Wings under Avatar Accessories instead of Components. Then they have the body part categories of Feet and Hooves, Ears and Tails and Horns and Antlers in avatar components under "Cosmetic Enhancements' next to makeup when the afore mentioned have nothing to do with Cosmetics. Then of course to add insult to injury LL decide to put the sub category Furry Accessories (which includes heads, legs, etc) under Avatar Accessories, however, then have the main category Furry whereby they have a Furry Component and Apparel subcategory, but leave the accessory category in the wrong area. But never fear, in their infinite wisdom they then put the sub category Anthropomorphic (i.e. Furry) Accessories in the Furry main category whilst still leaving the Furry Accessories (exactly the same thing) sub category in the Avatar accessories category. Then on top of that they have the Furry Apparel category under Furry main category instead of the main Apparel category. Now whilst you would think that was the end of it, they then decide to create a subcategory of Hands and Feet in the Furry main category (despite furries generally not having as such) but then have hooves as well as horns and tails under Avatar Components instead of under the Furry main category. Now granted some items are used by both furry and human such as tails, hooves, horns, etc, however, by creating the unnecessary Furry category (and other categories) they have separated items to much. This has two negative impacts, firstly a person searching, for example, clothing or body parts for a furry will generally search in the main Apparel or Avatar Components category not furry meaning people miss items being sold (impacts user and creator) and if they search in the latter they will miss out on the furry category stuff in the former. Secondly, it means the creator needs to know where those categories are which they dont because they are not in the right spot or are in multiple locations and need to pick (often wrong) a category that they know will get the most hits. The same applies for Human related items as well. TL;DR: Marketplace is a mess due to mislabelled and badly located categories which LL created which forces creators to put things in the wrong place or not know where to put them. LL need to seriously look at what they have done in MP and fix it.

  21. I also am optimistic! I keep hoping they actually some basic things like wearing / using flexi. Got an old outfit with flexi hair? Too bad, it sticks straight up! But I do believe Mobile can be a possible path to the future, so long as onboarding / outfits / scripting / basic building are added at SOME point!

  22. And THAT is why most content creators DON'T make much for males, and why some males constantly complain that there is so little for them to buy. "Why would I want to go shoe shopping? I already have A pair of shoes!"

  23. Not too good. I tried the Gianni Brox avatar. Looks good, fits clothing OK. But the sit height is way off. I usually use Roth, which has a good default sit position. Sit with Brox, and if you're not on an adjustable seat, you're about 0.25m above the seat. That's not adjustable, is it?

  24. I was watching a video earlier, and I thought of your post. I have not used vrchat, have no clue about the functionality, but in one video I was looking at it appears that they have the ability to record from separate cameras. At around the 3:19 mark you will see what I mean, the avatar seems to reach out to the camera, adjust it, and continues to drive, it appears that they have two cameras in the application, one which they are viewing through from the perspective of the avatar, and a second which is recording. Imagine having that feature in SL, now that would be a real treat, especially if we were to have multiple cameras we could set to record videos from. The only way I think we could do that currently, is to have separate viewers loaded, with alts acting out the part of the camera, while recording. Even then though, I am not sure if you were using one computer for this, how difficult it would be to record from multiple viewers at once.

  25. I'm not promoting Sharpview for wide use at this time. It's a tech demo at this point. Running it on a Raspberry PI is pointless. It's intended for gamer machines with a good GPU. Minimum is about an NVidia 1060 6GB. It's intended to answer the question, can we make Second Life look like an AAA title on a machine that can run AAA titles. The answer appears to be yes. When I started, people were saying that was inherently impossible. It's not. It does, however, take a lot of GPU memory and network bandwidth. While I've been working on this new implementation, (Sharpview is 100% safe Rust, all new code) though, the C++ viewers have improved quite a bit. They now have ALM as standard, PBR is close, multi-threaded asset decompression is now in several C++ viewers, and in general things are looking up. Looking ahead, the really hard problem is to figure out some way to bake avatars, with all those mesh layers, down to one mesh and skeleton, like an animesh. Like Bakes On Mesh, and done at the same time, when clothes change. That's really hard. But it's necessary if we don't want things to choke every time we get 50-100 avatars in the same region. At least for avatars further away than 2-3 meters, where we can get away with some loss of detail, it's probably possible.

  27. Peeve: Hair stores at events trying to sell one style in one color ONLY for 300L. C'mon, get off your bum and learn how to texture other colors. If you can make one color look good, you can do more. You're just being greedy. I can go to the absolute best hair stores in SL and get a whole color pack for that amount of money.

  28. since I have a homeless premium that will be downgraded in some month I decided to have a go at Fantasy Houses. Rolled one I like after a couple of days trying. The treehouses are what made me try so got one, close to a pond and a waterway, a bridge and a road, everything I wanted. Loving the place. Mine is the only treehouse in the pic.

  29. A little behind-the-scenes pic of a WIP. When one chair has the right pose and the other looks right for the shot - had to pull out all the poses (since the given menu names didn't align with the animation name), put them in a pose stand (under the floor), flick through them, and then just position the model (who by this point had eloped!) in the chair I wanted in the shot. Also a temporary upload of some random Stilleben motif I nicked off Google (inb4 all the 'how do you not know that super famous painter?!' comments, lol) to put something into the frame as the plain whitewashed wall was, well, a bit plain (I briefly tried with some random damask curtain I found in my inventory, but it was a little too much), annnd .. Scene.
