  1. Hi Residents! I’ve come to ask for a favor. We’re in a really exciting time in the history of Second Life. We’re in the home stretch on moving the grid to the cloud. We hit a fun milestone a few days ago, and now there’s over 1,000 regions running in the cloud! Everyone in the Lab is working hard on this project, and we’re moving very quickly. I just got out of a leadership meeting where we went over what’s currently in flight, and there’s so many things moving that I lost track of them all. It’s amazing! The favor I’ve come to ask you for is your patience. We’re doing

  2. About 11 years ago I was working for a big multinational that had acquired the startup where I'd been for several years, and decided I needed a job with more fun and more job satisfaction. I put out the word on my professional network and got a response from a colleague who was a Linden at the time. I interviewed with several people at the Lab (half my interviews were in-world using an account I'd had for some years), and after much thought I joined the Lab as the Director of Open Source. It turned out to be one of the best career decisions I ever made. My job evolved over the years, but

  3. Hi Everyone! I know there is a lot of anticipation built up around the release of Stilt Homes. We have been working diligently to get them done and release ready in the midst of a tremendous larger project, known as Uplift. We've hit a huge milestone with that today, where 100% of the regions on the grid have now been uplifted. That said, we still have some work to do in our preparation along side that having happened, some of which had to be paused off and on in between things happening. Hopefully, we'll make more progress over the upcoming week, and there is a holiday we're workin

  4. Today we’re rolling out a new logo for Second Life. Second Life has seen a surge of interest from people new to SL, longstanding residents, and groups and businesses seeking a uniquely interactive place for gatherings and special events. With this renewed attention we decided it was time to update a key part of how we tell the world what SL is all about. Second Life is still going strong, with a devoted and energetic resident community, and we want everyone to know that. The old logo has served us well but no longer projects our vision for SL as we move into this next decade. T

  5. Like many of you, we are feeling a combination of horror and outrage over the history of racism against Black lives. What we continue to witness is deeply disturbing and demanding of immediate social change. The killing of George Floyd seen on video around the world is only one in a long and unacceptable series of violent and racist attacks and discriminatory behavior directed against people of color. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, all victims of systemic oppression and violence, and with Black communities across the U.S., the globe, and the virtual world in condemn

  6. This forum post is to serve as a longer form message which will be linked to by the Linden Homes messaging system. Hello everyone! This is just a friendly reminder that while Bellisseria may be connected to mainland, it is not mainland. Living in Bellisseria means abiding by the Covenant for Linden Homes. If you have not yet done so, please take a moment to read the Covenant by going to your Linden Home and looking under World > About Land > Covenant. Something we have been hearing many complaints about lately are Residents using security orbs that are not set co

  7. As the new year begins, we have some exciting news to share. The migration of Second Life to the cloud is now complete! All the interconnected services and databases that collectively provide you with Second Life have been migrated to Amazon’s cloud servers. The "uplift" to the cloud will help bring better simulator performance and also improves our ability to diagnose problems and scale our systems for future growth and improvements. Here’s a peek at the former cage in our colocation facility that housed our servers since 2009, now cleaned out and completely empty. Many

  8. Hi Residents! We rolled out some changes to how region crossings work this week, and I want to explain a little about why and what we changed. Please note that this blog post is gonna be a bunch more technical than my normal posts, because this is a tricky technical thing. Here’s a really quick summary, however: As part of moving regions to the cloud we discovered that region crossings between the cloud and our data center were terrible. Since we now had an easy way to reproduce the issue, we dug into it, and were able to find some really old bugs, and fixed them. Hooray! And

  9. Howdy everyone! I have returned with an update! 😁 We have just met with Yavanna and I am super excited to say that we will be working more closely together going forward on not only helping to support the pod tours system as it currently exists, but also expanding it in to other areas it does not reach today. I'm sure that as expansions and other fun add-ons unfold, there will be more updates on those as they happen. For the immediate future, the pod tour system should be retuning to normal functionality. Thanks to all for the feedback!

  10. We've been working hard on the Uplift of Second Life. If you have not been following this project, that's what we're calling the migration of our Second Life simulators, services, and websites from a private datacenter to hosting in The Cloud (Amazon Web Services). It's a massive, complicated project that I've previously compared to converting a steam-driven railroad to a maglev monorail -- without ever stopping the train. This undertaking has at times been smooth sailing, at other times a very bumpy ride. We wanted to share some more of the story with you. Our goal has been to move SL in

  11. Good day, all! Just jumping in to respond to a few of the comments... A few folks are speculating that this is the end of SL and nothing could be further from the truth. Any talk of dismantling or radically changing the fundamentals of SL that we know and love is inaccurate. While we can't get into specific details about the deal itself, I want to emphasize the fact that this keeps Linden Lab as an independent venture led by two investors who have a great deal of awareness about what SL is and isn't. They are excited to join and help us grow both SL and Tilia while also respecting an

  12. Hey Folks! Another quick update - the team involved in fixing up the issues is hard at work on many things, our issue preventing us from doing a large scale release is one of the many things they are working on with all things uplift. Tomorrow is another day and we're ready to release more homes as soon as they can get things fixed up for us to move forward. Again, thank you for your patience and I'll post another update as quickly as I can. -Patch

  14. All marginalized communities who face oppression, harassment and violence have the support and solidarity of Linden Lab. We stand with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and against hate, and condemn the violent and deadly acts occurring in our country. While the AAPI community has historically faced unique challenges such as microaggressions rooted in harmful stereotypes and the experience of being othered, over the last year they have been targeted by an unprecedented surge of harassment, intimidation, and attacks. The irresponsible language about COVID-19 used

  15. Hi Everyone! An update on where we're at with the Stilt home regions release. We tried with all of our might today to get them in to everyone's hands that wants them. Sadly our plans were thwarted by unforeseen complications. We're hoping to work through some more of this tomorrow, and I'll be back with another update as quickly as possible! Have a great evening and thank you for your patience with us as we work through these issues. -Patch, the Moles and the Second Life Land Operations team

  17. Well, this is awkward... Due to the ongoing public health crisis, we’ve experienced an unprecedented surge in demand for new Second Life regions. While we are thrilled by the heightened interest, the increased demand has consumed our available inventory of full regions and homesteads (there are still many parcels available on existing regions, both on the mainland and from private estates). We are committed to maintaining (and improving) the stability and performance of Second Life. So while we are very gratified that we can be of help to people in these trying times, unfortunately,

  18. Howdy! Back with another update, and probably the last prior to the Holidays. I have restored my original release post above. We have concluded several rounds of testing region releases and have determined that we can proceed at a paced release. We will release regions on a timed frequency throughout the rest of today while monitoring systems and progress. We will pick up doing so again after the Holidays. I can not predict how many we may get through or by when, but we'll do our best to get as many out as safely possible. That said, the KVP system while fixed is probably

  19. In general, everything is still running full steam ahead. There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, and not just for my team, but across the Lab. The uplift efforts are proceeding very well and you'll see even more about that soon I'm sure. As for me and the LDPW team, I took a real vacation with a bit of a daring trip to the house of mouse. Prior to that the we'd been super busy working on several large scale events, such as Titmouse and all the fun stuff we're just releasing around Halloween like the huge shopping event, Swagginator, all our gift and Halloween content, th

  21. 2020 has been quite the year for everyone, all around the world. We wanted to take a moment to wish you a safe and happy holiday season. I thought I would do another employee campaign, similar to the SL17B campaign that I did back in June. This time I asked different teams to volunteer for a seasonal image. The following are the teams that volunteered, and the last image is (almost) all of us, right after one of our All Hands Meetings! Season’s Greetings from the Executive team - they make all the important decisions! Season’s Greetings from the Tilia team -

  25. As has been mentioned, do not abandon your homes. A quick clarification on styles and such. There are 4 floor plans to the Stilt Home theme. There will be two placement options offered on the home selection page of the site. One of the selections will find the house placed where there are stairs are anchored to land, so those houses will be either the over land or maybe partially over the water for home placement. The other option offered will be for a home fully over water (no entry stairs). This is how you'll be able to choose witch type of placement you could select. In genera

  26. After an AMAZING 1 million views, the original thread "How Does Your Avatar Look Today" has, shall we say... evolved. The Intention here is to give everyone a venue to show off and showcase your avatars! YAY! A few basic "agreements" if you choose to post here; 1- This is a photography centric thread based on you/your avatar in SL. 🥰 2- Please keep comments supportive, friendly and/or constructive. 3- All disagreements and personal issues should be aired privately and NOT IN PUBLIC.😡 4- Please keep reposting limited to special posts (in your opinion) and please

My Tortuga: Updated Living area. I added a small room near the door (got the idea someplace else in this thread). Now I have a proper fireplace 🙂 I love my open concept kitchen! Outdoor patio 🙂

  30. So, here's a second pic from the same shoot as the night-time one above. Different angle, slight change to the pose, and (obviously) different Windlight/EEP. For this one, I just added a touch of bokeh to supplement the native "lens flare" in BD. I went in today to take a quick shot to capture my mood -- I guess "still, sad music of humanity" about says it. I'm not entirely sure which I like better. I suspect that the night shot is a better, or at least more striking picture (ironically, given that it was very much an impromptu shot, too), but this one is probably a more accurate record o

  31. I recognize a lot of furniture I also have LOL. The Trompe kitchen looks great in the bigger house. Too big for this little one. I had fun working outside in the garden and got to use a LOT of plants that were sad and lonely in my inventory. I used up 78 li outside and that includes my "boat repair" prop which is 20 and that very nice seating for four from last holiday season which is so close to "free prims" it makes me tear up LOL. All good. So I am off now as lots to do in that corporeal world. But here's what I have. GREAT palms by fundati and the spindly desert plants adding som

  33. Howdy everyone! I am potentially as confused as everyone else. But then again I've been out of town this week and I have some catching up to do. In any case while standing in the house of mouse, this did make it to my attention to look in to. While I'm digging in to find out what happened there are a few things I can assure everyone of: We've made no policy changes surrounding automated vehicles on the Mainland. We like the Yavapods system We use it in Bellisseria as the "engine" for the ferry boats, with Yavanna's permission of course We keep having it back t
