As concerns about the current coronavirus outbreak continue, we want to assure the community that we have taken steps to ensure that the Second Life operations stay steady while also helping our employees stay safe through this public health crisis. Our hearts and thoughts go out to those who have been affected by this unprecedented event. Second Life will continue to be available without interruption as we get through this tough time together. Due to our previous crisis contingency planning and the flexible nature of our distributed workforce, we are not expecting any changes to response times for support inquiries and payment processing. We know that Second Life serves a great purpose for our community as people seek ways to stay in touch with their friends and co-workers, as they grapple with new social distancing protocols, mandated remote work requirements, and other precautionary measures. With the closure of many universities and displaced conferences and events, Second Life also continues to be an option for disrupted organizations looking for new remote work, classroom or event solutions. To help, we recently implemented a reduction in pricing to a flat $99/month per region for qualified education and nonprofit organizations. We are seeing an increase in new registrations and returning residents during this outbreak. Please be kind and welcoming to those who may just need a friendly conversation to escape from this crazy world for a moment or more. If you have a friend or colleague who is looking for a safe place to socialize online during these tough times, we encourage you to help them discover how Second Life can enable them to feel less isolated by connecting them to your favorite communities or experiences. Like many companies across the globe, we’ve put into action new remote work policies for our employees to ensure that they can take care of themselves and their families while continuing to work from home. Prior to this incident, a large percentage of our company was already working from the “Moonlab” (that’s what we call remote employees’ locations), so we have been able to transition quickly and efficiently to a fully remote setup. For the past 17 years, Second Life has been a special place that brings people across the world together -- and we appreciate your trust and support as we get through this rough time together. There’ve been quite a few rumors about changes at the Lab and their possible effects on Second Life and Tilia. The truth is that we have made a few operational and personnel changes to ensure that we continue to stay strong for the next decade and beyond. This means that we had to say goodbye to a few employees, but at the same time we also strengthened our team by bringing back some heavy hitters who will help make Second Life better than ever. So, Second Life is still here and still strong. We’re continuing to invest in its future and you’ll see the results of our commitment this year as we roll out a new mobile companion app, new Linden Home themes, performance and usability improvements, and a number of other new features and enhancements. The ability to change names will be available in the next few weeks, too. These changes reflect our commitment to making SL strong for many years to come. To infinity and beyond!

As the end of the year approaches we’re working hard on improvements to Second Life, including your most-requested features such as Name Changes, enhancements of the Marketplace, Events, and Premium Membership. Here’s a rundown of what to expect, including some important fee changes which will soon take effect. THE RETURN OF LAST NAMES -- UPDATE & CONTEST We heard you loud and clear. Soon it will be possible to change the name of a Second Life account. This is one of our Residents’ most requested features and we’re working furiously to make it available by the end of January. Name Changes will be exclusively for Premium members at an additional fee. Changing one or both of your First and Last Name will be available as a single transaction. Last Names will be picked from a list, which you can help us curate. What’s a last name you would choose for yourself? We’ll soon hold a contest seeking your contributions to the pool of last name options. From all of the suggestions, we’ll pick five, and those five lucky Residents will be able to change their names completely free of charge! You will not need to be Premium to participate or to win. The contest will run December 16 through January 15th, and participation details will be announced shortly. MARKETPLACE CHANGES & FEE UPDATES Effective December 2, 2019, Marketplace Product Listing Enhancement fees will be reduced by 10%. Listing enhancements allow merchants to promote their items by displaying them as “Featured Items” on Marketplace pages. On December 2, 2019, commission rates on Marketplace sales will become 10% of the item price. This will be the first commission increase since the Marketplace debuted a decade ago. This new rate remains significantly lower than most digital content commissions across the industry. Apple and Google charge a 30% commission on sales in their app stores, as do many other popular virtual worlds, VR and gaming platforms, such as Oculus and Sinespace. This fee change helps offset our costs as we invest heavily in new Marketplace features and improvements, which remains the Internet’s largest user-created virtual world Marketplace with more than 5 million items. Over the past year we’ve added a store owner’s ability to designate other Residents as Store Managers, who can help merchants run their businesses. Recently we have taken steps to clean the Marketplace of outdated or inactive listings so that higher-quality listings are more visible to purchasers. We’ve also added long-requested features like customer-initiated redeliveries, a Revenue Distribution page, Wishlists, Favorite Sellers, and much more. More changes are coming in short order. The ability to filter limited quantity and demo items is just around the corner. A number of improvements for navigating shopping and order history for shoppers, and a way to prevent limited-quantity item redelivery for the Merchants. Mobile-friendly layouts are coming. Additionally, we’re working to improve the ability for Merchants to issue refunds. We’re also planning to give the Marketplace a facelift later in the year, and we’re looking into a way to develop a native vendor system that better connects inworld sales and tracking with Marketplace transactions. EVENTS FEES & CHANGES Improvements to the Events pages are in the works for 2020, too. You’ll soon see more functionality and a new look, such as the ability to set an alert on an event you want to attend, to follow your favorite event hosts, to share your event calendar with friends, and to see the latest event developments in a news feed. Here’s a peek at a concept design (subject to change): Pictured: Early concept for redesigned Events pages We’ve heard many complaints from our Residents about duplicated event listings and spam. To combat this problem, we’re introducing a nominal fee which will help discourage spamming and encourage higher-quality events from committed event hosts. Basic members will be charged L$50 to create an event listing while Premium members will pay L$10. On the heels of this change, we will introduce the ability for Premium members to schedule recurring events. PREMIUM PLUS Changes are underway for Premium Membership. In 2020, you’ll see a new membership level, Premium Plus. This new option will join our classic Premium tier as an additional choice for Residents who want to get even more value from their Second Life. We think that many Residents will appreciate the new benefits and features of Premium Plus. Speaking of Premium … some astute Residents have noticed a lot of Mole activity around the Belliseria continent. Could something be afoot? Speculations abound! We are happy to confirm... NEW LINDEN HOMES Yes, it’s true! A new Linden Homes theme is on the way. On the heels of our recent additions of new Traditional, Houseboat, and Camper themes, the final touches are being put on for the next theme. You’ll be able to get an exclusive first peek at the newest Linden Home offerings at the SL Christmas Expo, held Dec. 5-25 in Second Life. MORE TO COME IN 2020 We’ve got more in the works for 2020, too. Don’t forget that you can contribute your own feature requests for our team to review in JIRA. Simply login to create a new JIRA and select “Feature Request.” Did you know that most of the recent improvements to the Marketplace came from Feature Requests? Thanks for your continuing dedication and creative contributions to the Second Life community. We are so excited for everything that lies ahead!

Today we’re rolling out a new logo for Second Life. Second Life has seen a surge of interest from people new to SL, longstanding residents, and groups and businesses seeking a uniquely interactive place for gatherings and special events. With this renewed attention we decided it was time to update a key part of how we tell the world what SL is all about. Second Life is still going strong, with a devoted and energetic resident community, and we want everyone to know that. The old logo has served us well but no longer projects our vision for SL as we move into this next decade. The new logo uses clearer, bolder type to communicate our optimism and confidence in what the future holds for SL. We retired the soft green color in favor of bright blue to reflect the boundless energy of our residents, who create amazing content and experiences. When it comes to what you can do with SL, the (blue) sky’s the limit! Second Life is a big product. In addition to the Viewer, there are hundreds of web pages, and the old logo is on all of them. We don’t want to distract our teams from the important projects our community knows we’re working hard on. So you will see a mix of new and old logos for a while as teams find time to make updates. We’re all excited to use the new logo and we hope you like it. -- The Second Life team

Back by popular demand! After being gone for almost a decade, last names in Second Life are now available once again! THE HISTORY OF LAST NAMES So, what’s the big deal you say? Well, a bit of context might be helpful for newcomers and those who created an account at any time in the past decade or so. Back in the day, Second Life Residents were given the option at registration of selecting from a variety of pre-determined “last name” options. The use of shared “last names” helped build community among Residents who found instant kinship and bonding amidst these newfound virtual family ties shared with strangers of the same lineage. Similar to the commodity of dot-com domains, some “last names” held a special status in the community. Some were extremely rare and, in some cases, there were perceived attributes and reputations associated with certain last name offerings. To make sense of it all, there was even a dedicated website put together by a third party to track the history and availability status of last names (which tended to rotate in and out of circulation quite quickly). It all came to an end in 2010 when Linden Lab announced that “last names” would no longer be available amidst the roll-out of “display names,” which allow Residents the opportunity to use their real name, nickname, role-play name or social identity in Second Life. While display names do allow for a great deal of flexibility and freedom in expression, some Residents mourned the loss of the common shared “last name” options that helped people across the globe bond together across the metaverse. For those who are curious to learn even more about the sordid history of “last names,” there is an interesting thread that goes into more detail about “the very real panic over virtual surnames” on reddit. THE RETURN OF LAST NAMES Given the ongoing interest in “last names” among our community, we’ve reinstated “last names” effective today as a new option for Second Life Premium Members. If you have a Premium account, you will be able to visit https://secondlife.com/my/account to change your first, last or both names. In the true spirit of the original “last names” option last seen in 2010, participating Residents will once again be able to choose from a rotating list of available last names. Some names may only be available for a limited time, so if you see one you like then you might want to claim it quickly! Already changed your name and want to go back to one of your old names? You can do that too! After you have changed your name once, you will see a list of your previous names below the list of available last names. Please note that “display names” are still available at no charge to everyone. However, “last names” is a new optional feature just for Premium members and a separate $39.99 fee applies when you change any part of your account name. In order to ensure your name changes proceed smoothly, please make sure you are logged out of the viewer before changing your name. There may be a delay of 24-48 hours for your new name to show across all services in Second Life. We know that many of you may have further questions about how this all works and that’s why we’ve put together a dedicated FAQ to help explain things in even more depth. This is the list of current available last names (as of April 13th, 2020).

Like many of you, we are feeling a combination of horror and outrage over the history of racism against Black lives. What we continue to witness is deeply disturbing and demanding of immediate social change. The killing of George Floyd seen on video around the world is only one in a long and unacceptable series of violent and racist attacks and discriminatory behavior directed against people of color. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, all victims of systemic oppression and violence, and with Black communities across the U.S., the globe, and the virtual world in condemning racism and any and all actions that promote division. Our mission at Second Life has always been to help build a better world, and in support of Black Lives Matter, we will be donating $10,000 each to three charities that are active in helping to fight oppression and injustice including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). How can you help? This weekend, you can participate in the Stand for Justice fundraising effort dedicated to raising funds for Black Lives Matter, Black Visions Collective, Campaign Zero, the National Police Accountability Project, and a Split Bail Fund benefiting 38+ bail funds nationwide. We also highly encourage you to sign petitions, text, call, or donate to show your support, acceptance, tolerance, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. Now is the time for us to come together as a community and to stand up for what is right, just, and decent. We hope that you will stand with us in our fight for a better world and in recognition that Black Lives Matter today and every day. - The Linden Lab Team CREDITS: Photos: Hoseok Yun (top left), Prophet (top right), Janet Voxel (bottom left), and Nico Sorbet (bottom right)

Hi folks! It’s time we bring a new style of Linden Homes into the mix. Now, in addition to Traditional and Houseboat styles, we’re introducing the newest theme: CAMPERS! You may have seen these Campers at the Linden Homes preview during SL16B. Clustered in central Bellisseria, the new Camper regions offer a secluded, rural environment, with more nature and parcel privacy than the previous theme locations. Campers allow for a simple lifestyle: choose between 8 versatile styles on 512 sqm parcels, all with open floor plans, nestled in the wooded Bellisseria regions. The campers include a new feature allowing you to rotate the direction of your camper 180 degrees! Remember, you can still use the other portion of your premium land allotment towards another 512sqm of land elsewhere on the mainland. These new Camper regions feature some special community areas as well, such as the Campwich Lodge and railway stations in select regions. Like all Linden Homes, these are first-come, first-served, so act fast to claim yours! Also, as an update to the Traditional Homes content pack, the highly requested roof and floor textures are now available. Please grab a new content pack via your mailbox today to receive them. Enjoy!

Hi Residents! This past Sunday wasn’t very fun. Second Life had issues for a bunch of hours. I want to explain what happened. The trouble started back on Thursday. We had some pretty bad problems talking to key services (packet loss) on one of our Internet links. It didn’t impact everything, but the stuff it hit was pretty important. It started for a few hours on Thursday, but just magically went away on its own. It’s never good when a problem just magically fixes itself because it’s pretty likely it’s gonna happen again. The same thing happened again on Friday, but once again it went away on its own before we were able to debug what actually happened. We were nervous going into the weekend, and sure enough, it bit us again on Sunday. We started having more Internet communication problems, but this time, it didn’t just go away. Now that we had it in a bad state we started to troubleshoot and figured out really fast that it wasn’t our equipment. Our stuff was (and still is) working just fine, but we were getting intermittent errors and delays on traffic that was routed through one of our providers. We quickly opened a ticket with the network provider and started engaging with them. That’s never a fun thing to do because these are times when we’re waiting on hold on the phone with a vendor while Second Life isn’t running as well as it usually does. After several hours trying to troubleshoot with the vendor, we decided to swing a bigger hammer and adjust our Internet routing. It took a few attempts, but we finally got it, and we were able to route around the problematic network. We’re still trying to troubleshoot with the vendor, but Second Life is back to normal again. While we were troubleshooting, I happened to look at the forums a few times and noticed people asking if it was related to the power outages we’re having here in California. As much as I want to say that it is, we have no reason to believe that's the case. The people on my team did get hit by them, however! One of our engineers was working in the dark in a house without power, with his laptop being powered by a long string of extension cords that ran to a generator outside. We are actively working on moving some services around to make us more resilient to incidents like what happened this weekend. It’s our top priority right now. We’re really sorry that this past Sunday wasn’t very fun. The weekend before Halloween is a really fun time to be Inworld, and it was a frustrating day all the way around. (I personally love the way our Residents really get into Halloween in a way that’s only possible in Second Life!) Knowing that it wasn't as awesome as it could have been makes me sad, and we’re working to make it better in the future. If you are having problems which you believe began during this outage, Support is ready to help. April Linden, Second Life Operations Manager

Good day, all! Just jumping in to respond to a few of the comments... A few folks are speculating that this is the end of SL and nothing could be further from the truth. Any talk of dismantling or radically changing the fundamentals of SL that we know and love is inaccurate. While we can't get into specific details about the deal itself, I want to emphasize the fact that this keeps Linden Lab as an independent venture led by two investors who have a great deal of awareness about what SL is and isn't. They are excited to join and help us grow both SL and Tilia while also respecting and recognizing the needs and sensitivities of the existing culture and community.

Howdy everyone! There have been some questions and discussions about decorating Linden Homes in Bellisseria for holidays and seasons. Bellisseria is very much a community and part of being a community is celebrating holidays. So yes, Residents are definitely allowed or even encouraged to decorate their homes for holidays they personally enjoy or observe. In response to the recent queries regarding seasonal decorations and content, we would like to announce the following guidelines being introduced as of today: Seasonal and holiday decorations are permitted as long as they are not intrusive to your neighbors and staying in general continuity of the area, as per the covenant. Natural seasonal elements are permitted if they are applied subtly, such as a light dusting of snow or a scatter of leaves. Decoration should not be placed out any earlier than 30 days in advance of any holiday or season represented and must be removed within 15 days of the holiday or season passing. As always please take your neighbors into consideration when decorating for the season. Outdoor holiday decorations are "in theme" with Linden Homes if they are congruent with the holiday season (no Christmas decorations in May or Halloween decor in April) Remember to keep all seasonal and holiday decorations within the borders of your parcel and ensure that no content extends over the parcel lines. We will also be updating the covenant to include the following: Seasonal and holiday decorations are permitted as long as they are tastefully applied. Natural seasonal elements are permitted if they are applied subtly, such as a light dusting of snow or a scatter of leaves. Outdoor holiday decorations should be congruent with the holiday season (no Christmas decorations in May or Halloween decor in April for example). Remember to keep all seasonal and holiday decorations within the borders of your parcel and ensure that no content extends over the parcel lines. Decoration should not be placed out any earlier than 30 days in advance of any holiday or season represented and must be removed within 15 days of the holiday or season passing. Happy holidays! The big day is here! The Environmental Enhancement Project has been released grid-wide. As of today the default viewer download and all regions on the grid fully support EEP! If you have not been following this exciting project, you can check out this wiki page and the community discussion. EEP offers: Environment objects that you can keep in your inventory and share with others Parcel-level control of environments Up to four different, independently controlled sky layers More options for customization New LSL functions rolling out as part of EEP allow scripts to interact with parcels’ environments: llGetSunDirection and llGetMoonDirection allow scripts to accurately track both the sun and the moon as they move through the sky. llGetEnvironment gives a script access to all the parameters that go into generating the parcel's environment. For example, flowers can change their color based on the ambient light color. An experience script can set up a distinct environment for each visitor to the experience, using llReplaceAgentEnvironment and llSetAgentEnvironment. Many thanks go to all the devoted Residents who have spent so much time and effort to help us test EEP and make it solid. Beta testing would not have been possible without those who participated in forums and at our inworld User Group Meetings. We’re excited to see the new environments you create, the experiences that feature dynamically changing environments, and the scripts that will read and react to the environment around them in real time. As ever, we welcome your comments and bug reports in Jira.

Happy Monday, Everyone! Today we are happy to announce the release of a brand new feature for our viewer which has been in production for a very long time. We’re quite excited by the possibilities offered by the new Bakes On Mesh feature for our content creators, and judging by their engagement thus far, they are too! What is Bakes On Mesh? In short, Bakes On Mesh is a feature that allows you to apply a server baked texture to a mesh attachment, similar to the way that standard system avatars currently work. Using this feature, you’ll be able to apply several texture layers to customize skin, tattoos, clothing, etc on your mesh object as a single server baked texture without the need for multiple transparent layers. Major Features Any face of a mesh object can be textured using any of the server baked textures. The corresponding region of the system avatar is hidden if any attached mesh is using a baked texture. New texture bake channels have been introduced to give more control over how meshes get textured. A new “universal wearable” is now provided with support for the new texture channels. Benefits Avoid the need for appliers, leading to an easier customization workflow. Avoid the need for “onion” avatars, leading to fewer meshes and fewer textures at display time. Allow for customization of any mesh that’s set to use Bakes on Mesh by simply equipping the appropriate wearables, without needing to modify the mesh itself. You can read more about how Bakes On Mesh works, and the wide variety of possible uses, in our Knowledge Base article on the topic, or watch an early demo created after our original post! We are excited to put this new tool into your hands and see what you all come up with! You can download the Bakes on Mesh enabled viewer release and start checking out Bakes on Mesh now.

Well, this is awkward... Due to the ongoing public health crisis, we’ve experienced an unprecedented surge in demand for new Second Life regions. While we are thrilled by the heightened interest, the increased demand has consumed our available inventory of full regions and homesteads (there are still many parcels available on existing regions, both on the mainland and from private estates). We are committed to maintaining (and improving) the stability and performance of Second Life. So while we are very gratified that we can be of help to people in these trying times, unfortunately, our current server systems cannot accommodate unlimited growth without adversely impacting that stability and performance. This means that region inventory in Second Life will be extremely limited and may not be readily available until early fall. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? As we’ve discussed previously, Second Life is in the process of migrating from our existing dedicated servers to a cloud hosting service. That migration has already moved a number of the most important services and databases, but we are not quite ready to host simulators in the cloud. We have a crack team working on that and are making lots of progress, but there are significant changes needed to make sure that we can provide the performance, stability, and security required. When that process is complete we will have a nearly unlimited region capacity, but until then we are constrained by the size of our existing server fleet. While our migration project has been underway for some time, even our most optimistic business projections did not anticipate a surge of the magnitude we have seen in recent weeks for additional regions. While we planned for growth driven by improvements to Second Life and other factors, we didn't expect demand to be created by a global pandemic. As a result, we are in the unfortunate position of hitting the maximum capacity of our “old” servers until the “new” cloud servers are fully operational. WHEN WILL REGIONS BE AVAILABLE AGAIN? Regions may be intermittently available as existing regions are returned to us by their current owners. Due to the economic impact of the public health crisis, we do expect that some limited number of landholdings will be returned to the general inventory in the coming weeks. This means that there may be some regions available on-and-off, but it is more likely that normal region sales will not resume until our migration to the cloud is complete. While we do not have an exact date at this time, we anticipate it will be early fall. WHAT IMMEDIATE OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE MEANTIME? So, what are your options if you are seeking land sooner? Owning land on the Mainland is an alternative. We can offer abandoned Mainland directly for sale with a range of various parcel sizes from 512sqm per parcel to an entire full region (minus infrastructure). You can learn more about purchasing abandoned Mainland in our Knowledge Base. Consider renting from an existing landholder. If you do not need an entire region, there are plenty of rental options available from established Second Life landholders right now. Learn more about how rentals work in our Knowledge Base. You can also explore Land Auctions in Second Life. Much like an auction on the popular auction-based shopping site eBay, Second Life Land Auctions allows individuals to place their bids on open inventory for available parcels across the virtual world. You can learn more about how the auctions process works in our Knowledge Base. There are also third-party sellers that offer both parcel and full land rentals and sales. For example, some of the better-known entities are listed on the Land & Estates category in the Destination Guide but you can also find many on the Forums or through the Land & Rentals tab in Second Life Search (on the web or in the Second Life Viewer). We’ll update the community as soon as we can when normal region sales resume, but in the meantime, we recommend any of the above alternatives until things get back to normal. Questions or comments? Please visit our related forum thread “Limited Availability of New Second Life Regions.”

When you get likened to your literary hero, you may as well go all out with it. (Yes, I even hid the fingernails on my right hand, to mimic Stephen Maturin's three missing fingernails.) An infrequent triple-image post from me, with slightly different photo treatment on the full-body shot than on the close-ups. And I was so glad I finally managed to find the perfect sideburns for this look. (Not sorry about the tintype borders. I love 'em )

As has been mentioned, do not abandon your homes. A quick clarification on styles and such. There are 4 floor plans to the Stilt Home theme. There will be two placement options offered on the home selection page of the site. One of the selections will find the house placed where there are stairs are anchored to land, so those houses will be either the over land or maybe partially over the water for home placement. The other option offered will be for a home fully over water (no entry stairs). This is how you'll be able to choose witch type of placement you could select. In general, the Stilt Homes while they are basically done and ready for deployment, we unfortunately do not have the region capacity to release them right now. We are aiming at after the AWS project completes when region capacity becomes available to us sometime later this year. In the mean time, we're already working on the next 3 themes after it. Theme 7 is nearly content complete, but not set-up for deployment yet. Then the following themes (8 and 9) are getting ready to enter content production.

The content packs are available via your house controllers. Please remember to adhere to the 🎄 Seasonal Content and Decoration Guidelines 🦃 An update to our release schedule - We’ve been hard at work on releasing regions and as I’m sure many have noticed, our new “normal” release schedule is generally 1 region per day minimum, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and other special circumstances. We’ve got a bunch more surprises to come. 🎁 Have fun decorating! Patch and the Moles.

I really miss RL travel. Sniff. Since I can't travel for real, I am continuing my SL ventures! Today I went to La Petite Joie.

All equally blessed. Mostly (maybe; I guess it depends) back, after an equilibrium-restoring two-month break from the forum.
