  2. ^^^^ this, a 1000 times this. Is that bridge one or two lanes in each direction?
  3. Have you tried some mobile debug setting that limits the # of avatars drawn? (I am pretty certain there is one, I thought it was set low.) I can at least set a music stream on my own parcel and test it there. I think going to a "busy club" would be good to see how all the "other" avatars are drawn (whether they look good, or like crap, etc.).
  4. I was testing it on my very old iPhone XS until recently when I got a new (midrange) iPad, and haven't noticed and crashes myself. But, I need to try it going to busy regions, like a club - and need to test that with the new streaming music feature turned on! Otherwise, I did submit a bug report today (the Sculpty issue I posted about elsewhere). I was pleased and surprised yesterday when I TP'd someplace where there were environmental sounds and it was on. It was nostalgic, since I usually have sounds off on my PC.
  5. As I mentioned, you have to be able to park your avatar in the club to listen to the music stream, and whenever I try to connect to a busy club via the mobile client, it crashes. So no, you currently cannot use Mobile and listen to a club's music stream—unless that club is pretty empty. (Believe me, I've tried!)
  6. That's interesting, implied is that it didn't go as planned for him (Oberwulff, or whatever he goes by). Maybe he will get added to the board of Thune, and we didn't get that bit of news yet? In your opinion, were these changes due to "cost" and "payment issues", or the general decline of SL for whatever reasons?

  8. I am currently beta testing the iOS Mobile client (I have one avatar who has a Premium Plus account, not Vanity), and I can tell you that the client crashes consistently on my mid-range iPad whenever I teleport into a region with a significant number of avatars (like a busy club or a shopping event). I can confirm that it already works well for group chats, or IMs with people nearby. In fact, it already does a lot of things well, but I would think that getting it to work in places where there are a lot of other avatars is critical to Mobile's success. As for "nobody asked for," well, I have been waiting for 17 years for the ability to lie on my sofa with my trusty iPad and log into Second Life! Mobile is a dream come true for me, even with its current limitations. But I'm an old fart now, and I have no clue how well younger generations of users (the Roblox/Zepeto/TikTok crowd) will take to SL on mobile. It will definitely appeal to the IMVU/Avakin Life crowd.
  9. Linden Lab has been delegating a lot of services to outside parties as of late, such as the servers being moved to AWS, mobile being moved to Unity (my guess is the main viewer will be as well), and now moving payment over to Thune. I don't work in the sector, but I would imagine this is just the evolution of the tech industry. It might make more sense in today's age to branch out rather than run your company like an island, separate, especially considering the rate of change in technology and regulation. Who knows, it might be cheaper to run SL this way, rather than have to worry about having lawyers keep up with every regulation in the globe, keep up with modern hardware and software, and gawdz know what else. It all goes way beyond my paygrade, and I am not willing to spend hundreds of hours doing research as the business side of things bore me to tears. Worse case scenario, they completely destroy SL, some greedy shadowy player at the higher echelons of LL is tapping their fingers together, as they slowly dissect SL piece by piece, selling them off to Meta, I guess the only way we will know is if one day we log in, and notice we no longer have legs... damn you Meta!! Damn you to Hell!
  10. True and I will keep my fingers crossed BUT it was made very clear when Openheimer bought LL that he WANTED Tilia and SL was a secondary acquisition that came along for the ride. So it could also go in the opposite direction. There has been time for Openheimer to "embrace" SL more of course and hoping that is the case. Meanwhile on other comments since I looked last -- I mostly know H and G creators, not clothing or mesh bodies etc but many of the furniture and house makers are downsizing in both land and events and I am in there with them. So even before this latest change there WERE movements going on at least in some arenas.
  11. Peeve: When someone messages you in-world, and they KNOW you have them blocked on the Forum. It's like they are OBSESSED!!! I find it distressing. Like someone chasing you around with an icepick, trying to give you a lobotomy.
  12. As an ex smoker (last century) I always called that a habit too, pack a day for nearly a decade. And it was a habit, even though it wasn't. Sometimes the word intoxicant fits better than drug. It's all a lot of semantics (with the game vs sandbox argument, as well). Games/platforms have addicting mechanisms intentionally built in to varying degrees, much like SL does, not just with loot boxes and such but leaving games open-ended I'd think(things like sims and stardew, maximizing the replay value). I'd say this was generally lesser known and understood 25 years ago, while far from unknown, but fbook especially was/is so atrocious that it forced it all out into the open. Industries have this all down to a science, more than just observations. And with light, that can be helpful and an irritant both, depending on quality and quantity. Where quantities get to be an issue it tends to be more obvious, less so with quality. More generally speaking, seeing the world through both/and sometimes makes better framing than either/or (the world we live in is both binary and not binary? I guess ditto with dualism)
  13. Oh don't worry about that, I've replaced the "obscene" parts of the breasts with black hearts now. Looks cuter anyways in my opinion. But thanks for telling me.
  14. Oh gosh. I hate this game vs. not-a-game argument so much (nothing against you, Wulfie! Just in general), buuuuuut, perhaps I could chime in with my opinion? My embarrassingly huge Steam, GOG, Epic, Prime, Game Pass, Itch.io, MMO, NES, and C64 libraries are compelling me to ... agree with you on this. 😆 That said... Yeah, SL is very, very close to a multiplayer open-world sandbox game in some ways. Minecraft, Roblox, GMod, let's not talk about Everquest Landmark or Next as I'm still mourning that, with WAY better fashion and a much steeper learning curve - especially for content creation. There are, of course, a LOT of differences, but I can't really fault anyone for making the comparison or coming here from some other open-world sandbox and expecting some things to be similar. I would say it's NOT similar to ones like No Man's Sky or Rust or The Forest or any of those survival/base-building/exploration-focused games, but yeah, closer to the list you provided, sure. I have seen it compared to The Sims, Animal Crossing, GTA Online, EVE, and Runescape for various reasons (everything from community to roleplay to economy to life simulation), but ehhhh, I wouldn't really put it with those myself. It's its own thing, really, BUT someone calling it a game because of XYZ doesn't seem too far-fetched to me overall. More on topic, which I guess is game addictions? Uhhh, yeah you could get addicted to some aspects of SL, sure. Shopping, for one. Loads of people blow tons of cash on in-game item shops in all kinds of games. And back when they existed - casinos, for sure. Wouldn't really throw it into the "grinding and raiding 24/7 so hard I'm missing work" category, though.
  15. Apparently, dangerously so! I am not sure why that is a "secret", most old-timers already know it is addictive "for some people". There have been plenty of threads and other discussions about it. Maybe the Psychology "experts" will chime in. I'm all ready with some 12-Step basics if they do!
  16. Well sorry for disappointing you but there's actually a way how to find out if someone removed you from their friend list: just check your trash-folder after noticing that your friend list became smaller. If one of the newest, deleted files is the callcard of your missing friend then yes, that's the person who deleted you.
  17. Sorry, but regardless of how people get their secret jollies without being on adult land, the day they officially ban adult content is the day Second Life dies. It might totter in for a few months, but anyone that spends any money on sl after that is being foolish.
  18. Thanks aht1981. That sounds great, although I was hoping to just have the YouTube homepage stay on the media face of my TV object constantly, ready to use whenever I want, for playing YouTube videos. I was looking on the marketplace and I've just bought this, which I believe will do what I want and more: Second Life Marketplace - [.Shuggles.] TV Script
  19. "A couple more finds for my decorating – above are two sets from Atelier Burgundy . I combined the two to make a pretty photo but they work alone just as well. I got the “Artists Clutter” set and the “Sketchers Clutter”. Both sets are just 1L and each piece is separate , land impact on all but one item is 1Li, the drawing pad which also has texture change for the paper is 3Li." Read more on the blog
  20. This has been a really interesting thread, so I'd like to contribute a bit more if I may. Please note, these are just opinions. 1. Why does Tilia even exist? Since 2020, Linden Lab has been focused on a portfolio strategy to enhance value and focus on its core competencies. Tilia exists as a byproduct of this strategy, primarily to leverage the specialized needs of a digital payment platform which includes secure payment processing, compliance with financial regulations, and enabling real-world value transactions within virtual economies. By adopting what’s often called a "carve-out strategy" and “carving out” Tilia, Linden Lab aimed to create a focused entity that could not only serve Second Life but also offer its services to other digital platforms, thus tapping into the broader market of digital economies. This move aligns with common private equity strategies where non-core businesses are spun off to improve operational efficiencies and unlock additional value. This strategy intentionally and successfully geared Tilia up for acquisition by a larger financial service provider interested in a low-friction licensed entry point into the lucrative US digital payments market. 2. What's in it for Thunes? Thunes is primarily interested in expanding its global payments network and likely views the acquisition of Tilia as a relatively low cost strategic entry point into the U.S. digital payments ecosystem. The deal with Tilia allows Thunes to bypass many regulatory and market entry hurdles, thus speeding up its capability to operate in and capitalize on the U.S. market. The association with Second Life as a customer, while notable to us, might be seen as less critical and in all likelihood as an undesirable but manageable overhead, not a primary driver of the acquisition. 3. The "5 Year Contract" The five-year contract was almost certainly stipulated by Linden Lab as a post-acquisition stability measure. This duration is crucial not just for ensuring uninterrupted service but also provides a buffer period for Linden Lab to potentially reorganize or find alternative strategies for Second Life. Such contracts are often used to mitigate transition risks and ensure continuity in service, which is vital for maintaining user trust and operational stability during the transition phase. 4. What it means for Second Life In the context of the much-cited BCG matrix, Second Life could be at best classified as a "waning Cash Cow" — a unit that once generated significant funds but now faces challenges in growth or profitability. A more realistic perspective within the wider market likely represents Second Life entering "Dog" territory at this point. In this context there are a few common strategies to be potentially adopted: 1. Investment to Revitalize: Sometimes, it might be worthwhile to reinvest in a Cash Cow to improve its competitive position or enter new markets, thus extending its life cycle. 2. Efficiency Improvements: Reducing costs and improving operational efficiencies can help sustain the profitability of a Cash Cow even as revenue potential declines. 3. Harvesting: Gradually reducing the level of investment and taking out as much cash as possible, maximizing short-term profits at the expense of long-term presence. 4. Divestiture: Selling off the business unit before it becomes a financial drain, ideally while it still has some market value. The adopted strategic direction for Second Life, given its classification in the BCG matrix, would largely depend Linden Lab’s perception of its ability to transform or find new market niches. Without significant reinvestment or strategic shift, maintaining its relevance and profitability will be challenging. 5. Final Thoughts We can only hope that Linden Lab views the imminent financial windfall from the Thunes deal as an opportunity to invest in Second Life and pursue a meaningful transformation strategy over the next few years Either way, this is not a foregone conclusion, and the Second Life community holds significant power in influencing this decision. It's crucial, however, that community efforts focus not on opposing the Thunes deal—which is already pretty much a “Done Deal” —but on persuading Linden Lab to use any potential profits as a catalyst for innovation. This could include the development of new features, the integration of advanced technologies like AR and VR, and even a comprehensive platform overhaul to enhance user engagement and attract new users. While opinions on these technologies vary within this forum, the overarching goal should be to ensure that Second Life is perceived as relevant and engaging to the widest possible prospective audience.
  21. LOL, every time I see this I remember adults telling me "Life isn't a game, young man!" Usually, they said that kind of thing when I was being a moody, teenage jerk. Eventually, I read some Camus, and could fire back with "Life is a game we play without ever knowing the rules." I remember years ago, there was a guy in my area who committed suicide over game addiction. He was so deep in Everquest, he lost everything. Very sad situation, he was in his early 30s, IIRC. You couldn't help but feel for the guy. His mother went all extremist over it, though, and became an anti-game addiction activist. It's sad what happened to her son, but she was a bit of a joke, among the gamers in the area that I knew. She even opened a halfway house for game addiction. She was featured in one of those game addiction documentaries. Last I heard, a couple of people who were about to become homeless for unrelated reasons convinced her they were game addicts, to stay at her halfway house for a bit, but her religious kookery was so extreme they only lasted a few weeks. I haven't heard anything new about her for like 15 years, so I hope she came to peace with what happened to her son, and gave up on her Quixotic crusade against playing games.
  22. In addition to all the above it is important to know that the nunber of items per folder is "theoretically" 10,000, but the practical limit is much less, same as the number of items you can squeeze into a prim. You can put 10,000 items into a single prim if you have the patience of Job, but good luck in ever getting them back out. More important a large (>1,000 say) number of items in a folder can cause slow logins and larger folders will most likely cause the login process to "time out" and fail. Contact Linden Lab Support about that, they can "unflatten" your inventory (frankly if you can do it yourself it is less ugly, they will do it but it's not pretty).
  23. Texture animation counts as rotation, right? // public domain texture-animation 'tick' script. // This script only works correctly when the rotated face has 0 offset and 0 rotation degrees and 1 Horizontal scale and 1 Vertical scale in the build window! (texture animation is buggy.) integer face = 0; // which face to rotate, or ALL_SIDES float degrees = 30.0; // how much to rotate each tick. float time = 0.75; // how long to rotate each tick float time_tick = 1.0; // how long is each tick in total (time+pause) integer tick_max=12; // if non-zero, only do this many ticks. integer tick=-1; default { state_entry() { //llSetTexture("571d44bb-8e5f-a579-eaec-cdb0bd109b29",face); degrees = DEG_TO_RAD*degrees; llSetTimerEvent(time_tick); if(tick_max) llSay(0,"Time starts now!"); } timer() { ++tick; // end condition check: if(tick_max && (tick>=tick_max)) { llSetTextureAnim( ROTATE, face, 0,0,0,0,0); // SMOOTH bit on causes less smoothness than without it! // but having no bits set returns the face back to 0. llSetTimerEvent(0.0); llSay(0,"Time is up!"); return; } // do the texture animation: // must stop previous anim before starting the next one, or else animation will be instant: llSetTextureAnim( ROTATE, face, 0,0,0,0,0); // smooth bit on causes less smoothness than without it! llSleep(0.05); // 0.05 should always work, 0.0233 works 75% of ticks or so. llSetTextureAnim(ANIM_ON|SMOOTH|ROTATE, face, 0, 0, (tick*degrees) , 1+(degrees) , degrees/time); } }
