Question about names of abandoned/deleted sims

How long does it usually take until the name of a deleted/abandoned sim becomes available again? Just curious...

Or will that name be unavailable forever?

I have tried to give my sim a certain name, and a sim with that name existed before and was deleted sometime in 2011, but the name is still unavailable.

I have an idea that such names may not become available again, but I can't say for sure. I think the same applies to group names.

I agree with Phil; I don't believe names that have already been used ever become available again. However, you can choose a new sim name (or group name, or avatar name) that varies by one letter.  To give you a fuller idea, you can look up the names of all sims, past and present on the grid survey website. They are set out in alphabetical order for convenience.

Just ask Linden Labs if they will release the name for you.

I've had it done for me, never hurts to ask.
