Naked Profile Pics

Recommended Posts

I would say it depends on where your friend goes and where the picture is in her profile.

As Qwi says, profiles are technically required to be G-PG rated. However, if your friend spends most of her time in adult areas, I doubt most people would care. If no "parts" are showing, most likely no one will care. If the picture is not her main profile picture but one in her picks, I think she'll probably be okay, though if she spends a lot of time in G areas she might have a problem.

Personally, my main profile is perfectly G-rated. My picks are not, but I do have a warning on my main profile page explicitly stating this.

My personal understand is that picks do not have to be G-rated; there are many places out there are are certainly not, and whose pictures are not, and it seems unfair to allow only G-rated places to be in picks. But if your friend's nude picture was her main profile picture, I'd certainly advise her to remove it and replace it with a more G-rated image.

Actually, I'd say that regardless of where you hang out or visit, your whole profile MUST be G-rated. The appropriate section of the wiki states:

What about profiles?

Content in profiles must be General, and must obey the Terms of Service and Community Standards.

It doesn't say the main page, the picks or the the RL section, it only says 'Content'. I take that to mean all content. It's not at all unusual to view content from the profiles of people who aren't even in the same sim as you. That means that a 14 year-old in a G-rated sim can view the profile of someone who never steps off Adult land.

To the OP... you are correct, you aren't allowed full nudity in profile content. You were right to advise your friend to change her profile. G-rated content is defined as "things that you would be comfortable saying and doing in front of your grandmother or a grade school class".

You're right when it comes to the word-for-word guidelines. The truth, however, is that practically, those guidelines are essentially defunct. Few follow them, because they're very difficult to follow and few people report profiles that go against them. I know I don't. I'll report for a lot of things, but not because someone has a nude picture in his or her profile picks. Maybe if the nude picture is of a child avi, but if it's an adult avi...Really, I don't care.

Of course, there are teens looking at profiles. But the guideline itself makes little sense to me based on how SL currently works - particularly with even profiles having ratings. If all profiles have to be G-rated, there is no need for a profile rating system unless profiles are rated to flag those above a G rating, which as far as I can tell, they are not.

In any case - OP, your question was in regards to the actual guidelines. According to those guidelines, you are correct - nude images cannot be anywhere in a profile.

No one was asking what was common sense, smart, 'the right' thing' or practically correct. The OP asked if she was right to advise her friend against nudity in her profile. You might not AR something like this and neither would I. 90% of the grid might not care, but it remains a rule you can be reported for breaking.

As I understand it, the ratings system on profiles is a bit of an accident -- it's apparently the Search word filter (which is really designed for rating adverts) flagging up words you've used in your profile.    That means completely innocous words tend to trigger it, and I can only imagine LL are using a bit of common sense here (yes, it has been known to happen) and not bothering unless i) someone complains and ii) they're complaining about something that's actually objectionable (rather than words like "Master" and "Slave," which always used to upset content filter for adverts).

As to profile pictures, certainly in the bad old days, people sometimes used to turn up at Blondin Linden's office hours complaining that LL had told them to change their profile pictures and didn't get much sympathy from Blondin.   I don't think the policy has changed, though maybe enforcement is less vigorous.

lol, I had a nude one for a while and no one complained :P It was a tasteful nude though, like a Marilyn Monroe nude. It was obvious I was nude but the pose was such that the bits were coverd by my arms, and was in no way vulgar, unless you consider art like Venus De Milo vulgar.

Maybe I am wrong but I thought the profiles used to let you set your own rating. Could be faulty memory banks on that and in any case, you can't now. I just checked.

same here. my current profile picture is the one I use on the forums as well. Looks naked (though she isn't, but all her clothing is out of the frame). Forum profile pics have to be moderator approved (or so it says, I noticed no delays after uploading it) and PG.

Of course one person's definition of "naked" may be different from another's. In some cultures even showing a knee or elbow is considered obscene after all.

You can try reporting it but don't expect much. I have reported XXX hard core porn pix in people's profiles sometimes in the past (they were in my G rated park at the time) and it was still there weeks later. A couple of the worst ones I looked again months later (just for research purposes, honest) and nothing had changed.

So it is against TOS but I don't know if that law has many teeth.

Nude profile pics are amazingly common.

If LLs ever starts enforcing the G-rating on profiles, there are going to be a -LOT- of temp or perm-bans out there.

- And I suppose it gives drama folks a very good source of ammunition in ARing each other.

My theory is that this will end up being one tick mark, and if someone gets enough ticks, then something happens.

- But they should reverse this part of the TOS and just let people set a rating on their profiles.

ESPECIALLY with their new gaming / social focus, they no longer need to get all of us to quit-SL so they can attract enterprise customers. Instead, they need to get more of us in here... :)

i wish they would just let us pick the rating for them and be done with it..they do it for market place adds..why not profiles also?

bleh..everything else is living on the edge of the thin line ..why stop at profiles LL?? lol

You are right ceka and pussycat

Personally i hate it when p.e. guys run around with their s***f cocks, but a bit naked skin in the pics isnt

very offending. We can hide our profile if we like so why complain about things you don't have to care about?

The teengrid is a long time gone and the lindens are rally nice ones, so they don't like to ban or reprove any

one with some naked skin in their pics. So what else? Prude peoples here? I think - partially - yes.

Here clash different culture- and moral values so we need tolerance. :smileywink:
