Collision Skeleton vs Avatar Collision Box/Egg

It took some time to chase down an answer. But I found one.

There is only coincidental relation between the Collision Skeleton and Avatar Collision Ellipsoid. The Collision Skeleton is a left over from the early days of SL and Primtars. Recently it has been used with llCastRay(). So, it more accurately represents the area detected by llCastRay().

I am not clear if this means llCastRay() can detect a collision with an out-stretched arm.

In a simplifed way it seems the Collision Box/egg/ellipsoid is a physics thing that happens in the server and the Collision Skeleton is something in the viewer that now represents what the server is doing with llCastRay(). 

...salt that explanation as it may not be all that technically accurate. The Lindens I asked weren't all that sure.
