Max out your cache size. Preferences->Advanced. Avoid clearning your cache unless you are absolutely sure there is file corrption.

Avoid streamed music and video. You can disable it in Preferences->Sound & Media.

Turn off voice. It is also in Sound & Media.

Decreasing bandwidth slows things but does not reduce the total data transfer. Set that for best performance.

Reduce your draw distance. 96m is not bad. The shorter it is the less your system has to download.

Go nude... no no forget that. :matte-motes-smile:

SL uses a lot of bandwidth, unfortunately.  It's not a good application to use if you have a bandwidth-limited account (such as a wireless provider...but you shouldn't be using SL with wireless anyway.)

Turn off the bells and whistles that Nalates described...sound, media, voice, reduce draw distance.  Also in your Preferences/Graphics, turn off all the shaders except Basic Shaders.  Turn off Particles and Local Lights.  Finally, don't move around much.  Every time you change your location or point of view, new textures are downloaded to your computer, eating bandwidth.
