[ACUG] - Adult Content User Group Transcript - 03/05/2012

Thanks.  It might have been better attended had you posted a reminder here -- I, for one, had got completely lost with all the cancellations and just didn't realise there was one due this week.

Yeah, this every-other-week thing isn't working.  If it's not every week, people (myself included) lose track of which week it's supposed to be "on" -- and then if one of those weeks is missed, nobody has a clue when it's going to happen again, which discourages submission of agenda items.

I think this meeting really needs to be weekly, even if the agenda is completely blank, with some allowance for on-the-spot agenda additions again for a while. In the distant past, this wasn't always productive, but it's a different situation now, I think.

I guess it's possible that there are no adult content topics needing discussion, or that the meeting isn't necessary for those discussions, but I don't think we can fairly judge that under the circumstances.  (Of course, if the objective all along was to make the meetings go away, well... all that remains for that would be to declare success.)

Repeating my thoughts on content and frequency, this meeting can really be split in two:

  1. A meeting for the Zindra mainland estate where LL meets the land and business owners of Zindra to discuss matters relevant to the continent only. Frequency weekly or bi-weekly.
  2. A meeting regarding adult content where one can discuss marketing and policy issues that is applicable to all residents and/or adult regions in general. My suggestion is a quarterly 3 hour meeting (mini conference) with a well prepared and published agenda. This to be complemented with day-to-day discussions and announcements in the forums.

Again, I would really caution against holding any meeting on a bi-weekly (every two weeks) schedule.  Shortly after "Office Hours" were transubstantiated into "User Groups", several of them were set every two weeks, and every single one of them is gone from the list now.  Granted, correlation does not imply causation, but if there's an irresistable force pushing toward killing the meeting, let's just put the thing out of its misery now.  If not... well, my caution remains: it takes much more organization, preparation, and commitment for a bi-weekly meeting to succeed than for a weekly one, and I'm not convinced any of us are up to the challenge.

when google finally put in a feature for fortnightly repeats in their calendar life became easier but the time still sucks for anyone not on mainland europe and the lack of warning if they're going to happen of course is a bit of a problem.

perhaps it's true taht there is nothing left to say.

We'd probably all be better off just kicking back and watching SL being run into the ground by people who haven't quite yet grasped the idea that the residents that they so detest are the same people who generate the income to pay their wages and that adult rated regions are in the least decline of all ratings types.  perhaps Rod has confiscated the crayons they use when they try to draw conclusions or something.

Couldbe, projecting motivations and feeling on the Lindens is non-productive and annoying to many of us. /end Couldbe

ACUG was succeeding and has now failed …or… was dysfunctional and has now succeeded, depending on who one talks to. Since we can’t see stats for how the new Adult Gateway is working and stakeholders in Zindra are off doing their thing in rather fragmented ways, I’m pretty sure no one knows.

There are User Groups (UG) that are effectively used by the Lindens and that are popular with residents. But, there is an apparent shift to move discussion to the forum and dispense with UG’s. I suspect the Lindens involved will have to go through the experience with the forum to understand why Office Hours/UG’s were started. The pendulum swings.

The bi-weekly meeting thing can work. There are other meetings that run bi-weekly and even tri-weekly. The difference is they are well scheduled and people know what is coming up. There is never any question of when a meeting is planned. I can put a reminder in my calendar and never have to change it. That has not been the case with ACUG. I think the confusion of when there will be a meeting is a much bigger problem than the bi-weekly nature of it.

I think there remains a great deal of confusion in the Lindens’ minds as to what to do with the sexual aspects of Second Life. It’s like having a prude do marketing for a Las Vegas escort service…

Facebook was created so some collage geeks could hookup. It worked well and morphed into what we have today. The Lab has yet to figure out how to tap into that sexual energy. So, the idea there-is-nothing-left-to-talk-about in the ACUG is not true.

But, until there is some awakening in the Lab, there may be little, if any, point to the ACUG meetings.

You know there are a lot of new users who just wonder how to get their avatar bodies set up to look like a natural, real woman and man before they even think of getting down and dirty, and to mix this with the kinks of the world in an "adult" portal is to me rather counterproductive.

If you look at the map tiles of the adult HUB sims, I am sure a large portion of new users right along feel this is not an area where I want to thread at all. For others, they serve their purpose, but I don't exactly see a stampede there.

So LL needs to strike a better balance at accomodating natural, complete avatars which invite to exporation of sexual SecondLife,  without having to take the plunge into kink and red light districts – which are fine for those who want them, but is probably much less mainstream (in the general population of new signups) than the impression you get in SecondLife.

you didn't like my element of drama?  sigh, I am sad.

as for the meeting, I'm still waiting for them to give the purpose and objectives of it.  Then we can attempt to measure the sucess or otherwise.
