I haven't been online much the past year but I noticed that the age verification system is self-certifying now so I finally did it.  The odd thing is that Linden Lab already knew my age and had it on file (it automatically punched my birthday in on the age verification page). It raises a question in my mind, which is If they had this information all along (presumably from my payment information) then why wouldn't an account like mine be automatically age verified either before the switch to self-certification or after?

Age verification lets you enter Adult and Mature rated sims and view and search for content with this rating.  Not every adult is interested in doing this.  There are a number of reasons, including they are here for RL business or educational purposes only or that they find it offensive.  This allows people to decide for themselves and not accidentally see or go to places with these ratings.  Its a choice. SL is a game for many, but not for everyone.  It has a serious side too and choices are always good things.

when they switched over from that other age verification..it did the same thing to me..

i was age verified before the switch..

it being a  new system i just went to look at it and seen it wanted me to do it again..i decided to leave it alone because  that stuff always made me leery ..

by leery i guess  i mean ..now if  this things has a burp then i'm gonna be dealing with LL for weeks with tickets and whatever else..

so i left it alone..then maybe a month or so later i looked at it and it was showing all certified again..

i guess it had to load me to it or something when they changed it over..and maybe going to that section refreshed it or something  and it updated my dashboard? maybe?

i have no idea really lol

i couldn't tell you how long it took because at the time i didn't really care about it..it may have updated after leaving that page the first time..

i just know it did it without me having to re-verify again..

But one can choose in viewer preferences what levels one wants to see.  Even someone who is age-verified, like me, can uncheck "M" and "A.'  And I think the default is "G" only.

default is G only for those under 18, G+M for those 18 and over. If 18+ AND age verified, the option to unlock A becomes available in your client.

Two possible explanations.  They have the information but you gave it in conditions where you were not obliged to acknowledge the information as true and correct for the purpose of access to adult areas (in other words it's about limiting potential liability).

The other possible reason is that their database is such a mess that it's just easier to make people push the buttons themselves, than try to automatically, globally update the right information fields within their database.
