how can i convert the lindens i am given by others in SL into US dollars

You must first sell your Lindens: they will be converted into USD and added to your USD balance. Then you can cash them out if you have a Paypal account (note that your Paypal account must be linked to a credit card). The cashing out process takes up to 5 or 7 business days.
