viewer suddenly closes while inworld, no messages, simply disappears

Most likely this is a connection lost issue somewhere between you and SL in San Francisco the connection has crashed. If you have a modem, unplug it, let it remain unplugged for 10 seconds then plug it in again. Run the network connection trouble shooter in Windows. Reset your system clock to repair your side of the problem if any. Both the trouble shooter and system clock reset can be found in Windows help.
