To put it mildly,  I hate what LL has done to the new viewer look.  I started in late 2007, and while I had a lot to learn about sl, everyone does when they're new.  When they made the decision to put out Viewer 2 - thinking it would "attract" more people, and "be easier" to use, it made the viewer, in my opinion, awful.  I don't like the big honking bar on the side for one thing - it takes up far too much space, and it's harder for me to work with.  Secondly - the viewer control SUCKS bigtime.  Someone told me they were going to fix it, yet I tried the new beta today, and it is still awful!!!  It doesn't work as smoothly as on the older viewer, and it is far too big!

I have recently seen something about FUI ( flexible User Interface) - and I saw a video of another viewer's work on changing the way the UI looks, more like the older one.  LL  - take a lesson from that and go back to the older viewer's look, it was SO MUCH BETTER.

Have you tried Firestorm? You can customize its UI so that it looks very much like the old V1 UI, yet has the V3 features.  Ever since LL wisely let the viewer code go open source, we have had the advantages of choice, and all viewers have benefitted by the competition among them.  If you don't like what one viewer looks like, use another one.

Well, you know, Linden Lab paid big bucks to a Ukranian software company to develop the new viewer. So it has to be good. It is irrelevant that one or more of the LL board of directors probably partially owned that Ukrainian software company. We all know that Ukranians know how to build the best user-interfaces in the world, even it they know absolutely nothing about what the UI is for.:matte-motes-big-grin-wink:

Sorry Margo, but I am feeling a deja vu reading your message. I hardly remember how many months ago we were talking about this issue in the forums :)

"Big honking bar on the dise"? What viewer are you using? In the last versions of the offcial viewer you can move the buttons, there is no the siide bar of the Viewer 2. And you have Firestorm and other third party viewers.

I started SL somewhen last year and used V2 right from the start and found the side bar - once I get used to it - a good thing (especially since I already knew similar UI from other specialised software).

I was recommended tu use phönix instead and found it a shock, for me personally a source of big anger since I found it to be unintuitive to put it nicely :D

I think the look of the UI is a matter of personal taste (I am not talking about technical issues, just the design of the UI).

I don't understand the argument of the side bar taking to much space on the screen since it can be hidden with a mouseclick, alternatively the single parts of it can be detached.

Meanwhile I am using Firestorm (although I didn't try the newest release yet), and it has a lot of possibilties to tweak the UI to your personal liking, and you can make it look very close to V1 (if that's what you prefer).

Some of it doesn't go away.

There are some blatant UI design flaws which got into Viewer 2--they were there in the Beta--which never seem to have been fixed. I have downloaded the official viewer from time to time, and been presented with the same dumb, stupid, fundamental UI choices. My eyes aren't your eyes, but I find myself wondering sometimes if the Lindens are not some sort of alien reptile, walking around San Francisco wearing rubber masks.

Perhaps it would be time that someone develops a usuable viewer.

Tried Phoenix a few days. Both older and 1600 version. Sculpties and alpha textures load much slower, there is a stupid bug that objects can simply vanish due to an object-object-occlusion bug, very crash sensitive, crashing using search, sudden seep drop of fps near alpha based prims like trees, plants. The skins are extreme childish and need sunglasses to look at... good grief, who ever made these... I did notice that Phoenix still is very much in use by many, but i gave it up in a few days. There have been too many updates covering issues forgotten by QA... rolling my eyes.

Cool viewer. Hit button Mini-map... crash, all the the time i push that button.

Firestorm: way too low FPS like the SL's official viewer 3.

Which brings me back again to 1.23.5... pfffff. It seems the only one performing stable for hours. But it cannot be downloaded anymore, so it is put here: http://www.sensic.nl/PrivateMedia/Second_Life_1-23-5-136262_Setup.exe

But all in all... who... who.... who is going to be able to actually make a usuable recent viewer.

At this moment the situation really is hideous. The Phoenix/Firestorm team at this moment seems to just copy bugs from LL and even forget matters to QA.

.... who is going to develop a real usuable viewer.
