Just like in RL. With MONEY!

If you mean you want a Linden home, you will have to updgrade to a premium account. Then you will be able to choose a house from 4 different themes. You will receive a 300L weekly stipend every Tuesday + a 1000L bonus paid after 45 consecutive days being premium

OR: you can find land either on mainland or in a private region. Then find a house (you can choose from loads of them on the marketplace). Rez it, decorate it, and that's it. Have dun!

you can either look on the marketplace or do an inworld search when you find a home you like try and demo it in world if you can at the creators store if you want to buy it make sure any land you rent from another resident or land you pay tier to LL on is both big enough and has enough prims to contain the home. another option is to pay for a premium membership you are allowed either a Linden home they come in a variety of themes and styles or a 512sqm plot of land tier free you can't have both without paying tier on the 512 plot

That's really two questions!

A "house" is an object.  You can build a house, or buy one at a store in world or on the Marketplace.  But you still need somewhere to put it...you need land.

You can buy land, or rent land, or even get both land and a free house on it by getting a Premium membership and applying for a Linden Home.

You have a huge amount of choice in buying or renting land, and it can be confusing.  I teach a class on this topic on Friday evenings, 5 pm SL time, at Caledon Oxbridge University.

If you are new, suggest renting a home on someone elses land for a bit before jumping into ownership.  Give yourself some time to decide where you want to live, what your sl life will be like and how much RL money you wish to spend to support it.  There are great rentals out there from small private islands to small apartments...it all depends on how much you wish to spend.  You can also become a premium member of SL and choose either a free house from LL or a small plot of mainland (a 512) tier free.  You would have to buy the land, but a 512 is pretty cheap; the free house you just register for once you have membership established.

When looking at rentals make sure the landlord is reputable; there are great ones and scammers out there.  Look at how long they have been in SL, and maybe talk to those who have rented from them for a good while.  I have rented from Jayson Dorn for many years and have found him to be very fair, but there are many options for you.
