Try a different region.   You can select it at login.  If you don't have the Startup location selection available go to Me - Preferences - General tab and turn it on.

See the Knowledge Base article about the message "Waiting for region handshake"; http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Login-failure/ta-p/700109#Section_.1.1 You will see that usually is an issue with your firewall.

Waiting for region handshake

The "Waiting for Region Handshake" message occurs when the Second Life Viewer does not receive an acknowledgement from the server.  The usual cause of this error is a firewall blocking UDP packets. Reconfigure your firewall to resolve this problem.

you may like to try the following :-

uninstall SL

Reinstall V2 viewer, if that doesnt work ty the V2 Beta version.

Hello asdyf and welcome to SL Forums. We had issues earlier in world with inventory database maintenance and unscheduled maintenance, so some residents had log in issues. Please see: http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ If so, i assume that your problem got fixed now. Next time when you can't log in, generakkt you have:

1. Check http://status.secondlifegrid.net/
2. Try to log in a different region
3. Restart your modem / router
4. Try Irene's suggestion (only with this error message)
