Start with Natalia Zelmanov's blog >>> http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2006/11/build.html   That's the way a lot of us started designing clothes and other things in SL.  Her tutorials are clean, well-illustrated, and friendly.  A bit dated sometimes, but still a good way to begin.  Then consider taking an in-world class.  There are usually many of them being offered each week, so do a Search to find one that fits your schedule.  Beyond that, practice like crazy.  A lot of the design work has to be done outside of SL in a program like Photoshop, GIMP, or Blender (for sculpties), so there's not much that someone can do to help in world, other than critique your results.  If you have questions along the way, of course, you can always post them in the Building & Texturing forum.
