Because there is a limit on how many alts you can have. I think it's something like 5, usually. It's easy to get around by generating a new IP address, from what I understand.

You're taking it way too personally. LL doesn't randomly single people out for things, like limitting how many alts they can have, etc. EVERYONE has the same limits; some are just better at getting around them than others.

ETA: I should add a note here - I am NOT advocating any method of getting around or violating the rules in any way, just saying that that's how some people generate more alts.

How were you "shown" anything at all about how many accounts shared your IP address? By some resident relying on a Redzone-type scanner? If so, that has no legitimacy at all from LL's perspective. It's just some resident making their own decisions, and they can't enforce anything on you, other than banning you from their land.

If LL has an issue with how many accounts you have, they will send you an official e-mail about the issue. If you haven't seen any such e-main, then my best advice is to consider that "alert" to be nothing more than a declaration by that land owner that they don't want your business. Go elsewhere, and avoid their land.
