The word you're looking for is nearclip. :)

Every camera in a 3D simulation has a nearclip and a farclip.  Anything in between the two will be visible.  Anything outside them won't be.

In SL, we can control the farclip, via the draw distance slider.   Unfortunately, there's no way to control the nearclip.  It's a very annoying omission from graphics preferences.
