Well that is a good questions as it is not an easy one but I have been there many times and feel your frustration.  However, someone wandering into your house is not really griefing but it's close.

I assume you are in a Linden Home which does not have any security other than some make believe locks on the doors that really dont do much.

1st is to report them. Make sure you have good notes and any chat that took place so that you have some good evidence.

When you eject, do an eject and ban instead if you can.  I am not sure if you have parcel rights or not but if you do, you can also set your land to private.

However, you best bet is to get some regular land on a private sim.  If you are on a Linden sim will wont have much in the way of privacy.

Everyone has a different definition of "griefer," so there's no  clean answer to your question.  Personally, I don't consider a casual trespasser much more than a nuisance.  If you aren't home, it doesn't make any difference who visits.  After all, nobody can steal your stuff in SL. If you have restricted building and object entry permissions, they can't leave their garbage behind either.  If you are home, all you have to do is eject them (World >> Parcel Details >> Access) if they don't leave under their own steam, and then add them to your ban list if they come back.  The bottom line is that you can only do so much to keep people out of anywhere in SL.  Once you've done it, IMHO, anything else is a waste of energy.

The real griefers are the ones who take advantage of your failure to restrict building, object entry, and terraforming by filling your parcel with screaming self-replicators and bringing the sim's server to its knees.  By comparison with trespassers, beating those evildoers requires higher-order skills, broad authority, and (occasionally) some specialized tools.

If you are renting, you may have limited or no enforcement powers...talk to your landlord about the problem.  If you give him the name(s) of the troublemakers, he can ban them from the parcel for you.

If you are allowed, you may install a security system.  Or possibly your landlord will want to do that for you...again, talk to him first.

If the intruders are doing something in violation of the Terms of Service or Community Standards, you can submit an Abuse Report to Linden Lab.  However, simple trespass is not generally considered a serious offense.  Check the abuse categories listed on the form when you click Help/Report Abuse, and if the situation seems to fall under one of them, go ahead and fill out the form.

If you feel you have to do something RIGHT NOW and can't wait for the landlord, you could a) whip out a gun and shoot 'em, b) teleport elsewhere and do something else fun for a while instead of confronting them, or c) Mute them and ignore them.

Bear in mind that a lot of people in SL don't understand English, and some people think that they can "take over" any empty dwelling as their own.  If your troublemaker has a combination of both these problems, it can be tough to deal with.  Google Translate and a bit of cut and paste may allow you to discuss the problem diplomatically.
