Hello Fiona5. Your see your avatar this way because obviously it is not fully loading. Try the following step by step:

  1. Move to a region without lag, or better relog there. Protected lands like Smith, Exeuxoa or Anzere are recommended. If you use the official viewer 3 and you can't choose a different region, in your log in screen give the command: Menu Me --> Preferences --> General Tab --> Enable "Show on login" --> OK.  After click the down arrow where it says "Start at" and choose <Type region name> --> Smith --> Login.
  2. Stay there under the water, open your inventory type something in search there and wait fetching all your items till the last one. When fetching finishes, try to change outfit choosing choosing one with just the necessary stuff (skin, shape, hair, eyes, pants and shirt) without any attachments. Wait some seconds and rebake your textures with Ctrl+Alt+R. Repeat same process if it is necessary. Normally it will fix your issue.
  3. If the problem remains follow the suggestions at the following link: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail They work for all viewers.
  4. If still you haven't fixed your problem, perhaps you have corrupted files in your computer. If so, you have to delete them and to download new ones. To do that, delete all contests at the following folder and after repeat steps 1 and 2: C: \ Users \ (USER NAME) \ ApplData \ Local \ Secondlife / If the folder Appdata is a hidden, --> Windows Tools \ Folder Options \ View & enable Show Hidden Files/Folders

Good luck.

One of the old time quick and easy fixes is to change your active group. It doesn't matter which you change to, just that you change. As odd as that sounds it works. It will often cause your avatar to rez and other avatars around you to rez.

Another easy fix is to change your bald. Just wear a different one.

These two fixes are good for times when you do not want to log out.

LoveAngel's fixes are sort of stage two fixes for when the easy ones don't work.

There are problems that can cause this to be an ongoing problem. If that is the case, the full list of fixes is here: Avatar Render Problems: Ghost Cloud Smoke Ball Ruth. This avatar rez fail is a common problem. There are loads of recommended fixes. I think I have most of them in the article. If you narrow the problem to a connection issue, use this information to run that problem down: Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection

When I wrote the article clearing the SL cache was a sort of first step because we had so many corrupted texture problems. Now clearing the cache is very much a last step. So,  keep that in mind as you read the article.
