The information for your avatar, such as your inventory, what you were wearing, where you were, etc, is stored, but your actual physical avatar has disappeared into the ether temporarily, to reappear only when you log in again. Don't worry, you're not leaving your avi behind to stand around and clutter up a sim or anything.
