If your hardware (video card and CPU, primarily) are up to the task they won't heat up beyond what the card or CPU are designed to withstand.  If those devices are not up to the task, they certainly could heat up excessively...a computer chipset will do everything it can to perform any task it's asked to do and sometimes work well beyond their designed capabliities.  A heavy load on a hardware device with create heat.  Most hardware devices than an upper temperature threshold  that once reached the device shuts down to protect itself from destruction by the high heat.........for CPU's and video cards that temp is usually about 105 C (221 F).   That's what they are supposed to do......but supposed to do vs what they do might be something else.  Give yourself some wiggle room and think of 95 C as a hard limit to be safe.  So if you are running SL with a low end or low performing video card/adapter (CPU's do work harder in SL but they seldom get hot unless there's another cause) and you pushing the limits then that could be the problem........lowering your graphics preferences will help a little.

But, what is probably going on is that you need to clean out your computer case.  Dust build up on computer components traps heat and makes the hardware get hot.........sometimes very hot and very quickly.  The fix for that is cleaning your case.  For desktops it's pretty easy.  Just take the side off the computer case and blow all the dust out with a can of quality compressed air (I say quality because some of the cheap cans have moisture in them and moisture is something you don't want to spray on your computer's innards).  For a laptop it's not quite so easy.  You need knowledge about how to disassemble the computer to get to the inside.....it's best to take it to a reputable computer repair facility.  A temporary fix is to blow through all the ventalation openings to get as much dust out as possible (but you are really only blowing most of the dust around inside for it to settle somewhere else).

Get some hardware monitoring software to keep tabs on the temps of all your critical components in your computer.  Google "hardware monitoring softwars or programs) and you'll get many hits and most are free.  Or you can go to Download.com and find some really great programs.......just filter for "free".
