Just click once on your Linden balance at the top of your screen. That's enough to refresh it. Or pay someone 1 L. Your balance will be updated.

The sim doesn't have anything to do with it. The in-world L$ balance that is shown in the upper right corner of your screen is often not in sync with your true balance, as shown on the Account page of your dashboard at secondlife.com. Transactions take a while to register and be transmitted to your viewer. As Val says, all you have to do is click the L$ symbol to force the balance to update faster.
