So, I found this amazing freebie at the market: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/FREE-Urban-Steampunk-building-boxed/346764

The problem is I have no idea how to use this. I tried going to a sandbox map and unboxing this, but it doesn't work.

What am I doing wrong?

Also, do I need to have my own terrain/private island to install this?

Thanks for all the help!

Since this item is free, I took the opportunity of buying it myself to see what problems you might be having with it.

First, read the reviews to see if anyone else has had problems with it.

I suspect you may be new to SL, so maybe you're just having problems opening the box or using the rez box?

You should be able to rez a building in a sandbox, but it will get returned to your Lost & Found folder when the auto-return time for the sandbox is up.  If you don't have a Premium account, you might be better off renting a place to live, rather than trying to find sandboxes & land where you can rez a house.  It is possible to live for free in SL, but doing so either requires dressing in hidden spots, rezzing temporary structures in sandboxes, or finding some place where you can get free housing.

I went to a sandbox to try and rez it but when I drag&drop it, nothing happens.

I'm used to opening up boxes for clothes, skins and other little things, but never with a building, so I was wondering if I was doing something wrong since nothing kept happening.

Or I could just be lagging trememdously, but even after waiting a good while, nothing showed up.

While we're in topic, how would I find a nice, quiet, cozy piece of land for free where I could place this house? I haven't taken a good look at housing and land buying yet, but I'm really just looking for free stuff to play around in SL.

Ideas and suggestions are VERY welcomed, thank you everyone!

It's very difficult (almot impossible) find a Resident that give you land as a present :) But who knows. Maybe provide temporary, but give away ... (BTW, sell land to you by 0L$ it's impossible in Mainland, you cannot own land in Mainlad with a Basic account),

Well, I finallly managed to find a sandbox map where this thing rezzed... only it rezzed up in the air xD

Still,... Now I'm a little bit dissapointed, since I apperently can't use this unless I have a nice place to put it. WHat's the point of setting it down and decorating only to have it all dissapear in 3 hours?

But anyways, thank you so much for the tips, guys. You're really helpful. ;)

I was able to rez the box, select Open, & Copy to Inventory. I then pulled each of the 2 versions out of inventory & they looked fine. The only odd thing was that the houses rezzed about 10 m above my build platform, but that's not unusual with large items such as houses. Maybe the house rezzed, but you needed to pull back your camera to see it. Then you'd have to drag it down to the ground.

The version of the building with an interior is very nice, but is missing upper story floors & stairs. It's modifiable, though, so one could add floors & stairs to the build.

Lumychan,

If you contact me in-world, I have an unused house I'm planning to rent out. I can let you use it & my build platform for free till January, but after that I reserve the right to ask for rent or ask you to leave. I've rented out houses in SL before, but lately I don't want to be available to tenants as often as they might like. The location is very nice & has access to an inland sea.

One major lesson in SL: Houses are free, land is not! Someone pays for it, whether it is Linden Lab or a resident.

I'm happy for you that someone offered you some free land for a little while but that is unusual.

As for your house, it is probably rez-faux. Try clicking on the box and you should get a menu that says Rez on it.

It is also possible you were in a script disabled sandbox, and so the rez faux script did not work.

Most sandboxes either discourage or even ban if someone puts a house there to live in. (Even though it returns in a few hours.)

The OP didn't contact me about the house & land I was going to let him use, so I suspect he found other arrangements. Many newbies don't really need to own or rent land, as long as they have a place to rez items & change their clothes. I lived out of sandboxes & out of the way places for a couple months myself before I started renting a place.

As for the house, I got it myself & had no problem rezzing it directly from my inventory. There was no rez box, just a version one can could walk into & one that was just a solid box.

Thanks for the update.

The OP must have been rezzing the solid box one, and not known how to sit into it.

I'm with you. I had no home for most of my Second Life. It was only after a group I was in became age-verify only that I decided to venture out on my own. I'm over 18, but I did not want to sign up with Aristotle. It had a silver lining. I'd still just be floating around SL otherwise.

As long as one can find a private place to change in (thus avoid being banned for nudity most places), there is no need to own a house in SL. Unless one likes to putter around, decorate or landscape, one does not need land either. Those can be fun but are not necessary. Our avs do not feel shame, starve, or grow cold.
