Hello byteme and welcome to SL Forums. As a premium member you have the right to own a parcel / plot (piece of land) on Mainland 512sq m2 with 117 prims also without additional cost. So, if you don't want the parcel with your Linden Home you can abandon it and get another parcel in adult region (sim). If you need a bigger parcel with more prims there is a cost. More about here.

The only mainland which is rated Adult is the Zindra continent. The Linden homes lands are rated Mature. You may do whatever you please INSIDE your home as long as you don't advertise any adult acitivity outside your walls.

Please note that on some regions of Zindra, you will not be able to terraform or modify your land.

The prices are those of usual mainland and you will be paying LL. Your premium status entitles you to a 512 sqm there. Any additional surface will be charged in addition as follows:

All "Land" in SL is still a rented amount of server space, that costs Linden Lab a fixed amount of real money each month to operate, for electric power, the cost of the server room it is in, and the staff to maintain it. So no matter how you obtain your virtual land, there will be an ongoing cost involved.

The tier you have to pay each month on virtual land is much like the utility bills and taxes you have to pay on real property. Stop paying the taxes on your land, and the government will confiscate it, even if you own the land itself free and clear.

When you think about it, the "Free" home isn't free anyway. You only get to use it while you keep paying your Premium dues.

The "Free Linden Home" is a deal offered to entice new users into the experience of owning land for the first time. It is not intended as a perfect solution for most Residents, and it has limitations on it that most long-term tenants would not find desirable. The idea is to give Premium members a "Free taste" of what owning a home could be like, and when you tire of the limitations, you'll move on, abandon the freebie home, and buy normal land. They 'cheat' for the house, and have the actual house sitting just past the edges of your parcel, so its prims don't count against the 117 prims for your 512 M2 parcel. But that also means there's no way to enlarge your parcel. All the space between the houses is allocated for the resources needed to rez the houses themselves, and the surrounding landscaping.

If you abandon the free Linden Home, you will have 512 m2 of "free" tier, that you can use anywhere, including in Adult-rated sims in Zindra, which is the Adult-rated Mainland continent. If you can manage with just 512 M2 and 117 prims for all your needs, including the prims for your house, then you can pay a one-time fee for a 512 M2 parcel in an adult-rated Mainland sim, and enjoy that for free, with no other monthly land fees, as long as you keep paying your Premium dues.

You could also create multiple alts, and pay the money up front for each of them to be Premium. Combine their free tier by forming a group and have the group own the land. Over the course of a year, if you buy an annual membership for each account you do this with, you'll get almost all of that money back in L$ stipend, which you can cash out to pay for most of the next year's dues. Do that, and you could have 1024, 1536, 2048 or more of land anywhere on the Mainland, with no monthly tier bill. Just the annual memberships for each account.

ALL land in Second Life is, at bottom, a rental.  You are renting space on a Linden Lab server, and you will pay someone...either a landlord, an estate owner, or LL directly...a monthly or weekly fee of some sort.  This fee is often called "tier" although techically "tier" is the term for monthly land fees paid directly to LL for Mainland you own.

While you will always pay a periodic fee for land, you may or may not have to pay a purchase price initially.  Some Private Estate parcels can be had for zero or $L1 purchase cost.  A Linden Home is free, except for your ongoing Premium membership dues.  You can rent land from another resident on the Mainland and pay zero purchase costs.

If you want to buy Adult land, the nearest you can come is by one of two methods.

1.  Purchase a parcel of Adult land on the Zindra mainland continent from another resident.  You will have to be a Premium member to do this, since it is Mainland, and you'll pay monthly tier to Linden Lab if you own more than 512 square meters.

2.  Purchase an entire private island and register it as Adult land.  Private islands cost $1,000 USD to set up, and $295 USD per month.  Unless you are planning to rent out most of your island, this is probably more money than you had in mind.
