Something to make you laugh , and a question, what do I need to do to prevent some strange (non SL) people sending me something like this in the future? I put stars over her name:) the rest is genuine like she is lol

My guess is the saucy temptress is also trying her luck with many others apart from you, the hussy!  It looks like a phishing exercise to me to extract your email address at the very least.

Sadly you have not found love's intended and there is very little you can do to stop this except close your profile off from search and your SL feed to friends only.

I get "offers" like that all the time in my main email account, and have a large collection of different ways to spell Viagra from there.

But in 5 years of playing SL, I have never recieved a single spam message in the email account I started for my SL avatar.  I made a special account, expecting to be bombarded with junk from outsiders, but LL seems to be exceptionally good about not letting others have email addresses.   (Yeah, I am sure there have been breaches over the years, but all in all I am impressed).

Hello Tamara. The usual spams, known as "chain mails". You can't do something to avoid them, just ignore.

Since you say it is from a non-SL resident, it is possible the person picked up your avatar name off the SLum feed.  If you have your privacy setting for your feed to 'everyone' it is open to the entire interwebz.

How they got your email address is anyone's guess but it is an example of phishing.  Never reply to it and delete it immediately.

I'm going to second Venus's remark about how you have your privacy preferences set.  I've never gotten anything like this here and I haven't had a letter from a Nigerian prince in years on my RL email. Then again, maybe my profile don't speak so good of me! :matte-motes-grin:

Chain mails are considered 

a

scourge

of the Internet. A good way to limt them is

:

1. Don't give your mail everywhere in public
2. Don't answer to them

Correction: "Chain mail" is mail that you are requested to send copies of to people - hence "chain".

I don't know exactly what these are but I get them all the time. I haven't seen one stating my Second Life profile though but, then, I never read them beyond the first few words, so I wouldn't know.

I'm not so sure that this type is just after email address confirmations though. This type could be after scamming money when they get a bite. They are all not natural english speakers - often claiming to be Russian - and they may be after getting the cost of the visit to <whatever country>, and, of course, never visiting. They might also be after money because times are very hard where they are, or a family member is sick and there is no money to pay for medical attention, or some fictional reason why they are desperate for your monetary help.

Heh. I finally googled it for myself. This is why I was scratching my head. From an American English grammar site:

When a name ends in s, we usually treat it like any other singular noun, and add 's:

• This is Charles's chair.

But it is possible (especially with older, classical names) to just add the apostrophe ':

• Who was Jesus' father?

So since Venus is OLD (the name! really! I meant the name!) I think we'll go with your suggestion of Venus'.

I am old - really - and I remember being taught just to stick an apostophe at the end. I haven't come across the fact that ...s's is also correct.

And speaking of words that end in "s", I've recently wondered how to spell the plural of "series". I didn't do any checking and I decided that "series" is also good as the plural.

For information, I received these messages HERE in these fora, as Personal Messages. I never received those on my email address or on my web profile. But almost everyday I have to clean my boss' email inbox. He gets stuff like that all the time (generally with suggestive photos of young and attractive - well not always so attractive actually - ladies from Eastern Europe or Russia). There's just one step to think he provoked this! :smileyvery-happy:

It's like the word resource: it is already plural if in context.  Although many do, I do not plualize by adding the extraneous 's' i.e., resources.

It's a collective noun. Like a flock of sheep is unlikely to just have one poor lonely sheep in it.

But a farm might have several flocks of sheep.

Sheep is an interesting one too.

You can have a series of numbers which could be considered a single set. So a series can be a singular thing made up of parts. Or you can have a series of series so a plurality of series.

I go with series is either/or. I go with resource if you are talking about one thing, like trees, but resources if it is trees, animals, grass, minerals, etc.

Gah. This is horrible! A long time ago I made 99th percentile on SAT English and now, now I'm reduced to a babbling idiot of "where does the apostrophe go?" Usually a forum like this has resident grammar wonks. Where are they? Probably off stomping on what is left of my linguistic skill neurons.

But that series of parts is made of more than one part, making it several things to make one series, right? Therefore it is plural, or collective, never singular as far as I can tell.

I have a book about collective nouns, called "A Crash of Rhinoceros". Clowder of cats anyone?
