You're going to be hard pressed to run shadows, as well as mesh and other new features added to the SL platform recently.  My card, GTS250 barely runs shadows on Viewer 2.8 and it's slightly more powerful than your GT240.  I have a strong suspicion that my card will choke with Viewer 3.

A few things I would try.  First disable Vertex Buffer Objects (VBO).  Set your antialisias to no more than 4x.  Turn off antistrophic filtering.  Lower you draw distance to around 64 meters. And lower your bandwidth to around 500 kbps (lower still if you are on a slow Internet connection).  That's all in the viewer's preferences.  If you've set anything in the nVidia control panel, I would suggest resetting to the default settings........especially if you've set any setting to over ride the application control.

You can't do anything about your system memory if you are maxed already but with a gig of VRAM you shouldn't need much help from your system memory.......unless you are running a lot of stuff concurrently with SL (shut down unnecessary background programs.........I know some things like instant messaging and email checkers are nice but they eat up resources that can be used for SL.  Listening to a CD or Internet radio while building or working in SL is fun.....think about what's more important though and conserve every bit of resources you can since you obviously are having issues running SL).

You're going to have to sacrafice something with the system you have and your need to high quality video......frame rates and draw distance would seem to be the least painful to me.  Lowering your bandwidth will produce lower frame rates but it also gives your system a little less to deal with all at once.  The message you get tells me that your system is being overwhelmed with the information coming to it.......you need to slow that down to give your computer time to process that information.

It's more powerful than the 240 card you have now.  You do need to pay attention to the power supply requirement though......you won't necessarily get the performance the card is capable of if you run it with an under powered computer.  Not to mention if anything happens and you need to return the card and it shows any signs of heating (which being run with not enough power would likely cause), your warranty is going to voided.  Which brings something else up........it's a limited 1 year warranty.  I know FX (who make nVidia cards) have lifetime warranties............I would shop a little more my self.  I've had better luck with New Egg over Tiger Direct.

This bug is fixed in the latest beta version of the viewer, 3.2.4.    I was affected by it,  but can now run the beta with the latest Nvidia drivers.    I can also run several TPVs, including Niran's Viewer, which is a successor to Kirsten's Viewer and might be of particular interest to photographers.   It's astonishingly fast -- with my GTX 460, I'm getting ~30 fps on quiet sims with the graphics on Ultra and everything enabled (the beta is almost as fast, to be fair).

Hello Avarice and welcome to SL Forums. I had this problem in past with an Nvidia 520M when with my laptop several times used and logged in with different viewers (viewer 3, phoenix and firestorm). I can admit that it was a "scary" error message. Fortunately i resolved it clearing my cache manually and restoring all SL settings, deteleting everything into the following folders and relog:

  • C: \ Users \ (USER NAME) \ AppData \ Roaming \ SecondLife
  • C: \ Users \ (USER NAME) \ ApplData \ Local \ Secondlife
  • C: \ Users \ (USER NAME) \ ApplData \ Local \ PhoenixViewer
  • C: \ Users \ (USER NAME) \ ApplData \ Local \ Firestorm (same with all viewers you have installed)

You can except only the .txt files into the folder C: \ Users \ (USER NAME) \ AppData \ Roaming \ SecondLife \ avarice_serpente coping them in another position in your hard disk if you want to keep your nearby chat and im chat logs.
