Question

I am interested in purchasing Dragon NatuallySpeaking Software for my computer. This program allows you to say the words and it types out what you are saying. I was wondering if it was compatible with Second LIfe?

After looking at my question, I realize I left out a few important details. My operatiing system is Windows 7 Home Premium and I use either Phoenix or Imprudence viewers for Second Life. If there is anymoer information that I can provide that is important to know while making this decision, please say so in a comment. Thanks for taking a minute to read.

I would urge you to try a demo version of any Speech applications first. As the SL client, although it may look like normal input box, acts slightly different. Not forgetting that Windows 7 has a built in speech system which may help costs.

Some Speech-to-text software simply tells the keyboard to "press a key" when spoken, this works well. However, navigating around the sub-windows within the SL client can be a game and a half in this mode.

Text-to-Speech is also difficult as there are no standard Windows/Mac sub-windows in the SL client display, and (I believe) the input windows are not marked with the disability enhancement setting that helps Text-To-Speech applications work.

There are text file readers which "say" the last line of a file. These can be used on your Local chat Log file. I remember there was one on the Marketplace but forget the name of the creator. A simple search would do.

Good luck with your investigations into what I believe is an important feature getting into the immersion of a virtual world. :)

There happens to be a whole Wiki page devoted to Dragon software. It sounds like, from my quick read, that it is (or was) "compatible" but doesn't always function at its optimum. However, that Wiki page hasn't been updated since March 2010.

Nuance itself appears to market its Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 Home with Gaming SpeechPack as compatible.

I realize this is an old post, but the information may be useful to those performing a search. I've begun a more detailed tutorial/information area on the web here: http://www.syzygycommunity.com/support/using-dragon-in-second-life/

I will be adding sub pages to this section over the next month or so.

This is based on the Wiki I began a while ago here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Dragon.

Also, I will be presenting at Virtual Ability in about a month's time:

http://www.syzygycommunity.com/events/26/introduction-to-using-dragon-naturallyspeaking-in-second-life%c2%ae/

http://www.syzygycommunity.com/events/27/advanced-use-of-dragon-naturallyspeaking-in-second-life%c2%ae/

Cheers!
