how do i change the avatar that it started me with?

You have many choices.  In the current LL viewer, you can just click the Avatar button and select a new one.  There are also complete avatars and outfits in the Library >> Clothing folder in your inventory. Hello mvonhyatt. I can't find you in search in world so i assume that you haven't downloaded yet the viewer. So, at first you have to download the viewer and you can find it here. http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/ After you install it and you log in there with your username and your password. The easiest way to change your avatar is to click the "Avatar" button (it has an icon with 2 people). You can choose from Vampires, Humans, Animals, Robots and Venicles. Alternatively, click the "Appearance" button, it has an icon with a shirt and choose one of the default outfits there. Have fun!
