am not sure where some of the angst about SOPA is coming from as relate to SL. so i read the bill to try make sense of whats upsetting ppl

SEC. 102. ACTION BY ATTORNEY GENERAL TO PROTECT U.S. CUSTOMERS AND PREVENT U.S. SUPPORT OF FOREIGN INFRINGING SITES.

SL not a foreign site, nor does it support foreign sites

SEC. 103. MARKET-BASED SYSTEM TO PROTECT U.S. CUSTOMERS AND PREVENT U.S. FUNDING OF SITES DEDICATED TO THEFT OF U.S. PROPERTY.

(1) DEDICATED TO THEFT OF U.S. PROPERTY- An `Internet site is dedicated to theft of U.S. property' if--  (A) it is an Internet site, or a portion thereof, that is a U.S.-directed site and is used by users within the United States; and  (B) either-- (i) the U.S.-directed site is primarily designed or operated for the purpose of, has only limited purpose or use other than, or is marketed by its operator or another acting in concert with that operator for use in, offering goods or services in a manner that engages in, enables, or facilitates--  (I) a violation of section 501 of title 17, United States Code; (II) a violation of section 1201 of title 17, United States Code; or

SL not dedicated to theft, nor is it primarily designed to do this, nor is it marketed as one

(III) the sale, distribution, or promotion of goods, services, or materials bearing a counterfeit mark, as that term is defined in section 34(d) of the Lanham Act or section 2320 of title 18, United States Code; or  (ii) the operator of the U.S.-directed site-- (I) is taking, or has taken, deliberate actions to avoid confirming a high probability of the use of the U.S.-directed site to carry out acts that constitute a violation of section 501 or 1201 of title 17, United States Code; or  (II) operates the U.S.-directed site with the object of promoting, or has promoted, its use to carry out acts that constitute a violation of section 501 or 1201 of title 17, United States Code, as shown by clear expression or other affirmative steps taken to foster infringement.

this section to do with counterfeiting. am not sure how this would apply to anything in SL. RL trademarks possibly. LL always been pretty quick to respond to rl trademark violation complaints tho

SEC. 103. MARKET-BASED SYSTEM TO PROTECT U.S. CUSTOMERS AND PREVENT U.S. FUNDING OF SITES DEDICATED TO THEFT OF U.S. PROPERTY.   (b) Denying U.S. Financial Support of Sites Dedicated to Theft of U.S. Property-

 (1) PAYMENT NETWORK PROVIDERS- Except in the case of an effective counter notification pursuant to paragraph (5), a payment network provider shall take technically feasible and reasonable measures, as expeditiously as possible, but in any case within 5 days after delivery of a notification under paragraph (4), that are designed to prevent, prohibit, or suspend its service from completing payment transactions involving customers located within the United States and the Internet site, or portion thereof, that is specified in the notification under paragraph (4).

if credit card companies and paypal turned off money supply to SL then be this. not that it will ever bc SL is not dedicated to or primarily designed for theft of US property

SEC. 104. IMMUNITY FOR TAKING VOLUNTARY ACTION AGAINST SITES DEDICATED TO THEFT OF U.S. PROPERTY.

SEC. 105. IMMUNITY FOR TAKING VOLUNTARY ACTION AGAINST SITES THAT ENDANGER PUBLIC HEALTH.

no worries here

SEC. 106. GUIDELINES AND STUDY.

Attorney General to liase with agencies so they not mess it up Copyrights Office to make monitor effectiveness of legislation and report to Congress

SEC. 107. DENYING U.S. CAPITAL TO NOTORIOUS FOREIGN INFRINGERS.

LL not in the capital funding business of notorious foreigners

SEC. 202. TRAFFICKING IN INHERENTLY DANGEROUS GOODS OR SERVICES.

can pass on this one as well

SEC. 203. PROTECTING U.S. BUSINESSES FROM FOREIGN AND ECONOMIC ESPIONAGE.

well ya

SEC. 204. AMENDMENTS TO SENTENCING GUIDELINES.

havent decided yet how much pain u going to get if u a notorious foreigner stealing our stuff

SEC. 205. DEFENDING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS ABROAD.

Secretary of State and Commerce to do stuff to them notorious foreigners

+

so that leaves

SEC 205(1)(4) INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS- The term `intellectual property rights' means the rights of holders of copyrights, patents, trademarks, other forms of intellectual property, and trade secrets.

that pretty straightforward

TITLE II- SEC. 2. SAVINGS AND SEVERABILITY CLAUSES.   (a) Savings Clauses- (1) FIRST AMENDMENT- Nothing in this Act shall be construed to impose a prior restraint on free speech or the press protected under the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.

  thats pretty clear as well

+

SEC. 201. STREAMING OF COPYRIGHTED WORKS IN VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL LAW.   (a) Title 17 Amendments- Section 506(a) of title 17, United States Code, is amended to read as follows:

`© by the distribution or public performance of a work being prepared for commercial dissemination, by making it available on a computer network accessible to members of the public, if such person knew or should have known that the work was intended for commercial dissemination.

`(2) EVIDENCE- For purposes of this subsection, evidence of reproduction, distribution, or public performance of a copyrighted work, by itself, shall not be sufficient to establish willful infringement of a copyright.

`(3) DEFINITION- In this subsection, the term `work being prepared for commercial dissemination' means--

`(A) a computer program, a musical work, a motion picture or other audiovisual work, or a sound recording, if, at the time of unauthorized distribution or public performance--

`(i)(I) the copyright owner has a reasonable expectation of commercial distribution; and  `(II) the copies or phonorecords of the work have not been commercially distributed in the United States by or with the authorization of the copyright owner; or

`(ii)(I) the copyright owner does not intend to offer copies of the work for commercial distribution but has a reasonable expectation of other forms of commercial dissemination of the work; and

`(II) the work has not been commercially disseminated to the public in the United States by or with the authorization of the copyright owner;

`(B) a motion picture, if, at the time of unauthorized distribution or public performance, the motion picture--

`(i)(I) has been made available for viewing in a motion picture exhibition facility; and

`(II) has not been made available in copies for sale to the general public in the United States by or with the authorization of the copyright owner in a format intended to permit viewing outside a motion picture exhibition facility; or

`(ii) had not been commercially disseminated to the public in the United States by or with the authorization of the copyright owner more than 24 hours before the unauthorized distribution or public performance.'.

(b) Title 18 Amendments- Section 2319 of title 18, United States Code, is amended-- [amends wordings to the code]

© Rule of Construction- Any person acting with a good faith reasonable basis in law to believe that the person's conduct is lawful shall not be considered to have acted willfully for purposes of the amendments made by this section. Such person includes, but is not limited to, a person engaged in conduct forming the basis of a bona fide commercial dispute over the scope of existence of a contract or license governing such conduct where such person has a reasonable basis in law to believe that such conduct is noninfringing. Nothing in this subsection shall affect the application or interpretation of the willfulness requirement in any other provision of civil or criminal law.

operative words

(1) IN GENERAL- Any person

not any company or any website. means u, me, us

© Rule of Construction-

The fact that they are trying to shove it through  passed public awareness is more than enough reason to have a problem with it..this is from earlier this month

December 15-16, 2011 House Committee on the Judiciary mark-up of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act.

Only an hour before the House Judiciary SOPA Markup meetings started did the public get the amendments made to SOPA..It caused enough worry to cause two objections of the reading of the amendments to the bill so the meetings could be postponed so the public had a chance to review or even become aware of the amendments made to SOPA..

The meeting continued anyways as well as the reading of the bill..

0:25:00 the meeting starts..0:28:00 is when the first objection comes in and an explanation of why...

1:27:39 is when the reading  is finished and they start the meeting..it's almost an hour long reading of the bill lol..

For those wishing to watch the meetings..here is the first video..the other parts are on the side panel of videos..

i'm still watching them right now myself..but i just found it interesting right from the start  when the objections started..

these are long videos..i'm sure there are clips from them also..myself i'll be watching it ..it's for those interested in watching that may not have seen these yet..

this way we can hear them for ourselves and form a better opinion...

part 1 at the end has a few sound problems which became irritating..but i hadn't noticed any in part 2 as of yet..

1:09:44 part 3 starts

0:3:36 part 4 starts

 0:18:54 part 6 starts

1:55:30 part 7 starts

It appears the criminals trying to push through SOPA are the same ones that pushed through mass copyright infringement of content on the internet in the first place. Their own supreme court rulings actually threaten them as much as any stay at home mom who downloaded a few mp3s from one of "their" distribution sites:

Makes any copyright theft in SL look pathetically amateurish. Under SOPA SL would be shut down on the first day.

ya i had seen that video one day when i was looking at the sopa videos on you tube..

at first i didn't know if i should take him serious because he looked too happy or smiling too much rather than serious..

he really should have looked more serious rather than gloating..it gives off the impression of oozing bias..

i mean he is right about the things i had paid attention to in there..but he is very distracting because he just can't seem to wipe the smile off his facr lol

i just think he should have looked more serious rather than like he was having fun lol...it was kind of distracting and i'm sure it makes some people think he is making it up because he is enjoying it so much hehehehe

ppl say all kinds of things on both sides of any debate. can be quite heated and even hysterical sometimes. that ok bc is important to debate bills and try work thru the ramifications

+

like lots of other bills we all apparently doomed if sopa passes. seems we also doomed if it isnt. doomed as an alternative to what never seems to be explained well tho. probly ur doom for me is way worse than my doom for u, or something (:

i still haven't finished watching all 7 of those.. lol

it is interesting listening to them thats for sure..one consistant thing that i really paid attention to was when they were saying they needed people in there  or more witnesses that could give them a better understanding of the technical side so they knew what they were actually voting on lol..

the one guy  i think in the second video was so confused that he didn't feel he could vote on it because he just didn't understand what he was reading  for the most part..

i guess we will see what happens after christmas break is over for them or however long they take as to what they will be doing..

After seeing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASnQqBBmGcQ]this video, I suddenly realized I might have been very blind. Guys... are you sure they're doing this because some movie companies feel like they're losing a few millions from the billions they make every year? Because I'm willing to bet they're doing it to implement something like the Great Firewall of China... and for the same purposes too.

China does it so people won't badmouth their government and turn their citizens against them, and because some leaders are fanatics who believe watching porn is evil and must be censored. The US is a big and important country, and has a government willing to take some very dark decisions at times. They control most of the media, so the internet is the only way people find out about any junk they do. This probably disturbs them a lot. Would they really want millions of people talking to each other openly and knowing everything, without some law they can abuse to censor what crosses the line?

Sorry for unleashing more conspiracy theories everyone. But if this is true, it's the first move in switching to a totalitarian government. And the only thing that can stop it is people reacting and NOT letting it happen! They might want to shut people up so they can do what any evil leadership does, without people being able to inform each other about it and to keep them in the dark! This is something worth considering and informing people about... because America CANNOT be allowed to become the new world's dictatorship like this!

I don't really think so at this point. Been thinking more about the government theory, as scary as it's getting for me. It could be mutual at "best"... such as Hollywood working with the government here, so one gets their anti-piracy law and the other their Great Firewall of China, Hollywood playing the pretext part. But I'm convinced it's all about government censorship, which can be sensed if one looks deeper into everything that's happening.

Think of the search engine blacklists for example, proposed by SOPA. Would any country adopt such a horrid measure only to fight piracy? That's hilarious. Or would have SOPA gotten this far only with Hollywood's support, regardless of how rich they are? SOPA is too extreme, too desperate, and too sudden. No company has done this in decades, and none could afford it without getting a green light! It could only be done with higher support which goes beyond a bribe, and if it reaches interests of a higher level. Not to mention SOPA resembles the tools China uses on their internet... how could it be just for piracy and a coincidence? Not to mention the media silence and more. It all makes sense to me now... and if people don't stop this, America and the world are screwed beyond reasoning.

And yes, the government can already spy on websites and know what everyone does online. But they don't have any way to censor uneasy websites without admitting totalitarianism. This would give them the perfect means to close any site spreading political messages they don't like, or posting information they want hidden. The real war is not on piracy here... it is on free information, and directed against sites like Wikileaks and news bulletins. America is becoming the second China unless we stop it, and the first step in stopping it is for everyone to know this and see beyond the "Hollywood show" they're using as a smoke screen.

that video link is dead..

it's probably a little of both..i think they are worried it may have holes or create  something that they have no control over..thats one of the reasons i think they are bringing in the tech specialists..

i'm sure it's money and the worry of the other

some of those reps did a good job at bringing it to light ..enough to get them to hold over..

It seems Google and other major websites are at last planning a huge protest against SOPA. I dearly hope they will do it if need be. This would disrupt the internet for several days, and blackout most activities in a way that hasn't happened in decades. But at this point there's no choice, and we need to do everything in our power to stop this and signal the people. Go Google!

News: I received an email from a newsletter I'm subscribed to. A new voting date has been established for the senate version of SOPA, and it will be on January 24 (in 18 days from now). We need to convince more senators to destroy this bill, and show them the true consequences it would have. Currently there are only 2 out of 41 needed! The best way at this point seems to be an in-person meeting with our senators (if possible with friends joining up), and spreading the news so others can do it too. Here is the link. If you live in the US, please consider doing this... it's a chance to destroy the bill permanently!

Not to mention it has the potential to kill most streaming media in SL.

I was wondering about that myself and the DJ's who download tons of music, not all paid for and the musicians who sing and play songs they do not have permission to and collect money for doing so...... (at least we will be seperating the "cover" backing track posers from the true original content preformers)

Also, if US is blocked from sites outside the US without strong copyright laws how is it that LL can allow people from other countries access?

If passed, this will change a lot of things.

Then again, netflix and the businesses in SL streaming movies, what of them?

God help our communistic USA if this passes. And speaking of such, I am trying to quit smoking I don't think about having a smoke, until some dumbass decides I need to see a lame ass commercial about why I shouldn't smoke...

I understand google will be blacked out the 15th in protest... ?? I hope ALL search engines do this it sends a VERY strong message, however the revenue these search engines bring in to their creators will eventually buckle them and they will conform.
