You can do that at your Dashboard.

If you own any land you will have sell it or abandon it, including Linden Homes.

It's quite easy.  Go to your dashboard at secondlife.com and select Accounts >> Cancel Account from the menu on the left side of the page, or simply go to https://secondlife.com/my/account/cancel.php?lang=en-US . You may want to sell any L$ in your account through the Lindex before you leave.

You really don't need to do that, of course.  If you are a Basic member, just walk away.  Your account will just sit here, waiting for you to change your mind.  If you ever decide to come back -- lots of people do -- then your inventory and avatar will still be here.  If you cancelled your account, though, you'd find that your stuff would only be around for a few months and it would cost you $9.95 to get it back if you decided to return.  If you're a Premium member, abandon your land and home and then change to Basic membership before you walk away
