Hello FredPerryy and welcome to SL Forums.

1)Download the last drivers for your graphics card. For Nvidia: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us For Amd: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

2)Power down your modem / router for at least 2 mins, restart your computer, power on and try again.

3)Uninstall completely the program and also delete all contests at the following forders: a) C: \ Users \ (USER NAME) \ AppData \ Roaming \ SecondLife and b) C: \ Users \ (USER NAME) \ ApplData \ Local \ Secondlife Restart your computer, download and istall again the application.

4)Assuming that it is your first time you try to run the program, check out if your firewall or maybe an antivirus blocks it.

5)Set your graphics quality in medium and even in low for a while, in your log in screen under your Preferences and Graphics tab. See if that makes any difference.

6)Check that your Directx is 11 if you run Windows 7 or Vista and at least 9 if you use Windows XP. (Start button --> type DXDIAG and check the version. If you have an older one, download the new one by here.

7)Try a Third-Party Viewer.

DirectX 11 (or 10, or 9, or even 1) has nothing to do with SL or if it will run on your computer. SL is OpenGL (very different graphics rendering engine). Your computer doesn't even need DirectX on it to run SL. If you are running Windows 7 you have the capabilities to run DirectX 11 (or any other DirtectX engine). It's your graphics card that determines if a program that uses DirectX 11 will run or not. To use SL you need OpenGL 2 or above.
