Groups and group chat have become increasingly popular in SL over the past couple years. These are a few of my favorite groups for chatting about fashion where I go to friends (and acquaintances) for fashion assistance. What are yours?

The groups sound sound fabulous. I am not a group person.  I join interim event groups, land management groups, a couple store groups,  groups I am required to join for feed purposes and then the one and only group that I allow group chat and mesages, and that's your Fashion Bloggers group with Callie Cline.

My problem is that when I am sitting up on a pose stand and trying to get a blog done, I also like some "noise" in the background, so I am listening in on group chat in these groups. As a result, I ended up as a moderator in several because.. well... I am sure the owners figure if they can't kick me out, might as well give me some responsibility. I have made a lot of great friends through the groups.

I think that group chat is a huge huge bit of glue in SL for many people and creates the networks and linkages we may not have otherwise. It allows us to discuss common interests from afar. That's why we are all so anxious to see chat lag go away. It seems they are working hard on this at LL.

As for group chat, some folks don't like the intrusion and get aggravated by the "noise." Phoenix/Firestorm and Builder's Brewery always ding open when I log on and I just close them. No skin off my back.

Finally, regarding group chat, I think some manners do have to be followed: !. Don't send more than 3 lines at a time--too spammy. 2. Don't advertise unless it's acceptable in the group. 3. Keep to the topic the group allows. Some of these are just cultural things in the group. Fashion Emergency lets us talk about anything typically and things are only moderated when people get aggravated. Hey Girlfriends is the same but a much smaller group of people it seems. Menstuff can get raunchy and Womenstuff is much nicer. Skin Addiction is fun as is Fabulously Free but the topics can be a little more restricted. 4. If it's typically a chatty group, either leave or endure but don't complain. Who likes a whiner? 5. Do NOT ask for money in group chat. Ack.

=== DesigningSL Creator Feed on the Web:

The DesigningSL Feed is one of four themed feeds for residents of Second Life owned by syndicators Alon Alphaville and Alianna Logan. The goal of this feed is to bring together posts directly from fashion designers to furniture creators, to script and pose makers and everything in between. We are specifically seeking advertising for this feed so that consumers and bloggers can easily view new releases on a slower moving flow that is separated from fashion styling posts that tend to move much faster.

If you would like more information about DesigningSL, please don't hesitate to ask Alianna Logan (aliannalogan@gmail.com) or Alon Alphaville inworld.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope you'll join us!

Womenstuff.

There was also Fashion Emergency which I liked better than womenstuff since it wasn't a creators group (womenstuff gets spammed by creator advertisements all the time, so effing annoying), but that group apparently disbanded some time ago...
