I was going through some of my noob pics the other day when I remembered a comment from someone who was on my contacts list a long time ago. I wore angel wings when I first started in SL and while I'm not into RP I do love the fantasy aspect. however the person in question bluntly informed me that I would have to 'lose the angel wings' if I wanted to be taken seriously in SL and even though I don't wear them anymore. 'not for that reason' I still have them. in fact I accidently deleted them and went back to a freebie place and got myself a new set of the same wings. isn't SL about being who you want to be and who wants to be taken seriously? lol I mean SERIOUSLY not.

Never judge a book by its cover...

If anybody asked me to change anything on my avatar to be taken seriously, this person would fall down at the bottom of the list of people worth knowing. Judging people by their appearance is a caracteristic of a very hollow, superficial personality... especially in SL where you can be anything you want.

I would take more seriously an avatar who looks like a wooden cube with a rational discourse that another one in tie and suit who brings a PR-type behavior into SL.

Avatars are like bottles... the thicker the glass is, the less contents they hold.

Just keep your wings.

that's a pretty goofy thing for someone to say, although I'm sure it's true with certain people, maybe even certain groups, it's DEFINITELY not true of SL in general.

what does seem to be true in general is having a "cohesive" and "quality" appearance... people subconsciously tend to react better to people who look as if they aren't just thrown together from random junk.... that doesn't mean wings are out, but they should "match" the rest of your style... similarly quality counts (not price, there's plenty of cheap free good stuff, and expensive crap stuff) just like in RL people subconsciously react better to what looks like effort (particularly in grooming for RL)

themes are a-ok, even when the theme is mismatched items... as long as it looks like that was the intention, but only assuming the viewer gets it. doing a 3d picasso will win you some fans, but only if they know picassos work, otherwise they're likely to be put off.

but NONE of those generalities is a bar to people taking you seriously once they get to know you... they only open the door of first impressions a little wider to start.

Never belive those who say that your appearance does not matter in SL.

Of course you are judged by your appearance.  I know that sometimes people think this is a perfect world, but the typist behind the avatar is still human, with all the human flaws. And ready to pass judgement based upon your appearance. You find lots of smallminded humans in SL, afraid to look a bit different, always striving for the mediocre, "safe" look.

If you wear wings, you are silly. If you wear horns, you are a satanist, If you wear elf ears, you are a stupid Tolkien fan, if you wear glasses you are a nerd, if you are a furry you are a sexcrazy pervert.... The list is endless.

And if you have a human avatar with the standard beautiful look, you are of course a braindead "fashonista". Judgement goes both ways. The best is to just wear what you like. But you can't please all, that is simply not possible. But who cares anyway?

"Taken Seriously" By whom i wonder?

In situations like this I'm reminded of something my Aunty always said to me;

"Be Yourself, people who matter won't mind, and people who mind don't matter".

SL is an environment where you will meet people (And animals, and robots, and aliens and conscious inanimate objects) of every possible size and description so this persons claim that wearing wings will somehow damage your credibility with people strikes me as rather spurious.

Looking forward to seeing you soaring through the skies.

Angel.

When I was fairly new I was sitting alone at an outpost of the RP group I was in when I was joined by a person dressed in an amazing blue angel (or maybe fairy) avatar. We started chatting and it turned out that she was an artist and had joined SL to explore the cultural and artistic communities. After a while she commented about how sad it was that in a virtual world where we could fly, live in the clouds or underwater and choose any form we liked that the majority of people made idelized human avatars and lived in suburban style houses.

That conversation has stuck with me to this day and it's so true; most people are followers and either unwilling or unable to use their imaginations or to think outside of the mundane. When they see someone wearing wings, or dressed as a tiny wind-up toy or an anthropomorph it jars their concept of "normal" and they sometimes lash out. The best way tro deal with these types is to understand their self-imposed limits and simply ignore them.

A person once asked me why I didn't want to be "human" here. I turned it around and asked him why he did?

He couldn't answer the question.

Some of the most fascinating people look or act differently. I can't see shunning someone just because they have a different appearance. They may have an interesting story! I don't avoid someone that looks new or unfinished either. They may be new or just more interested in things other than theri appearance. I've met some of my best friends and most fascinating people by getting to know them rather than sorting them by appearance.

Most of the time I'm not a stereotypical human and have a great time with different avatars.

Have a great time in SL!

This sounds to me just like typical "people who choose differently than I do are inferior/defective/sheeplike/etc." and it doesn't matter what avatar or lifestyle they choose -- someone who looks down at human avatars is no different at all from someone who looks down on non human ones.

Kind of like in RL.

Um, no. Not at all. Since the vast majority of people who are my friends in SL wear human avs that would be pretty illogical of me to think that way. I most certainly don't "look down" on anyone's choice. That's their business, not mine. Just making an observation regarding the people who are vociferous about insisting that everyone should be like them, e.g. the "you won't be taken seriously if you wear wings" person from the OP.

Well I will just quote you again then because the only person you were referring to that insisted  that everyone should be like them was, well, the one you referrred to:

What is this, pick a fight day or something? I must have missed the memo.

What is your issue here? You might want to go back and refer to the guy in the OP who stated that someone wearing wings wouldn't be taken seriously.

Yeah, my opinion is that SL could be more than people all looking like 8' tall glamazons living in castles but hey, do they have the right to do so? Yep. Do I respect their choice? Sure do. Not my cup of tea but, their world, their imagination.I just chose something different. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean I disrespect it.

And now it's time for me to bow out. I've had enough of this nonsense. If you want to argue argue with yourself.
