I am able to log in but I can not visit the island I am supposed to for school

I have created my avatar and log in, I need to visit a specific location for a class assignment, when I select visit this location it does not take me there.

Be sure that you have logged with your viewer in ADVANCED mode, not BASIC mode.  If you're in BASIC, you can do very little, so log out.  When you go to log in again, select Advanced from the pulldown menu on the login page.  You should be fine.

Welcome to Second Life Answers, Courtney.

I presume if you belong to a class, that there is a teacher heading this class. They will have told you their avatar's name.  Look for this in the search facility inworld. On his profile you should see a group. Double click on the group name and join the group. Now try to teleport to the location.
