Additional bones/joints possible ?

So far importing rigged meshes has been a breeze to say the least. 
However , for the sake of creating ever more complex avatars, will it be
possible to use additional bones, provided that they are orientated correctly?

This will prove extremely useful for finer mesh control, facial expressions ..
the possibilities are endless...
