tint an item that is "tintable"?

How do I tint an item using the edit tool? which area of the tool do I click to get to the "tint" mode?

There is no 'tint' mode - use the texture tab of the edit window and change the colour (by clicking the colour swatch)

If you only want to tint part of the object (like a ribon on a hat, but not the hat itself), click the button in the upper part of the Edit window that says Edit Linked Parts, and then click on the part you want to tint.  THEN use the color tool in the Textures page of Edit to tint just that selected part of the object.
