I believe that Cool and Singularity are working on this for V1 interfaces, and possibly Astra (formerly Meercat?)...

as a workaround, if the shared media can be displayed in a normal web browser, you can set up an alternative by looking for clicks from the media face (which aren't passed by viewers that enable shared media) and use llLoadURL to open the media in a browser window.

that technique also works for media that will only run normally as shared media IF they set urls to open in the internal browser (teacup server, which is on the wiki, uses this technique)

Only the V2 and V3 based Viewers have shared media. Be aware however that many (hopefully most) Residents disable shared media in their Viewers, because the way it is implemented it presents a major security risk. It will, by default, load content onto your system without you having any say-so about what does and does not get loaded, and there is absolutely no way to filter out malicious server sites, or to apply security patches to the internal viewer code that displays the media.
