Rigged mesh joint position fail

I have not yet had success uploading a rigged mesh. Well, it rigs in the right place, but the joint offsets do not import.  What special steps do I have to take for this to work right?  Sorry for the vague description, but I really don't know where to start.  I have been unable to find information on this problem.

Have you been first selecting the mesh and then shift-selecting the armature before exporting as a collada?

After parenting the mesh to the bones and selecting "copy bone heat" have you selected just the mesh and gone to the modifier pallette in object mode and pressed "make real"?

 If you ever catch me online, Tyrian. I'll be able to help you out from there -- then after it works, I will post successful instructions in this thread for anybody else that may encounter this problem.
