Question

In some places there will be dancing campers.  Many say "sorry not in use" but others that are on one show how much money they have earned thus far.

Do all of the campers work, and you just have to be there for a certain amount of time OR are the people whose camper shows how much money they've earned, are they on the ones that work?

I'm a bit confused by this, so sorry if my question is confusing.

Camping used to be more popular than it is now.  Basically, it's a cheap way fo a merchant to make a shop or a club look busy, or to have a "live" model to show off clothes.  The merchant pays you a tiny amount of money to connect to the device that manages the camping spot (a pose stand or something similar, perhaps), and a script keeps track of how long you stay attached.  You get paid when you disconnect.  Some camping systems require you to do something like type a "Hello" message or click a button every few minutes so that you change position and don't look so much like a mannequin.  On other systems, you can connect and then go out for a long coffee break while your avatar is "working".  It's a really low pay job, but you don't have to do much either.

The term campers actually refers to the avatar that's camping.  A camping device is an object that pays an avatar to stay at a location.  Common ones are dance pads, camp benches and camping timeclocks.  Every device is different in what's required to use it, how often it pays and how much you can make per session.  Generally speaking, camping has been discouraged by LL for a couple years now do to massive complaints from merchants on the gaming of traffic scores by using camping devices as well as camping bots to run up a location's traffic and thereby appear higher in the search ratings.

In general, you use most dance and bench camping devices by "Sitting" on them.  Right click on the device and select Sit or Sit Here from the popup menu.  The timeclock style devices usually have a login button.

Good luck!
