Tour around and try as many free demos as you can. I tend to avoid shops that charge 1L for demos unless I really like the poster and want to try the skin. Have a look at this thread for some skin store suggestions.

Remember that how skins look depends on the shape beneath. Some people advocate modifying the shape to fit the chosen skin but I prefer finding skins that suit my shape with little or preferably no modification. As for finding shapes, just try demos until you find one that you like then tweak it if needs be. Demos will have huge hands and feet but otherwise will be normal. Alternatively, create your own using the 80+ sliders until you come up with a shape that pleases you. Shape makers are certainly more practised and skilled from experience but you do not need any external programs to create your own individual shape.
