Yes & no.

You can set your preferences to say that only friends can see your online status, but the truth is that anyone can see your online status in a variety of different ways if they really wanted to. Either by just using a viewer that shows it or getting a gadget to show it or looking in a group you are both in.

The only way to truely hide from someone is to create an alt account & not tell anyone it is you.

Welcome to Second Life Answers, minxiesub.

Peewee's answer is the correct one, but to add, if someone is bugging you, or you feel a bit like you want some space to yourself, or you wish to deal with IMs one at a time, you really are not duty bound to respond to everyone (do you always answer your phone in real life? I don't; it's there for my convenience, just like my SL is there for my leisure time).  You can simply just not respond to someone when they contact you; afterwards send them a message if you want to, explaining that you were already booked to do something else, or already had several IMs running and would prefer to give them 100% focus.

True friends understand.
