If both my partner and I have a premium account and we don't want to use the second house...can we rent out the extra one?

Only one house is allowed per premium account. You may abandon your Linden home and join your cash efforts to rent a piece of land and put the house of your choice.

The safest answer would be No. The FAQ about Linden homes however only states that you cannot divide, terraformed, sold, joined, deed to your group. You also are not allowed to make your Linden home as a business place nor having more than 5 avatars at one time (although I think this may have changed).

There isn't a statement that says you cannot Rent it out. So I'm not really sure about that.

as far as i'm aware renting a linden home is a no but that doesn't stop you abandoning the second home or not having it in the first place and buying a 512sqm piece of mainland instead and renting that out

You cannot rent out Linden Homes, they cannot be used for any commercial purpose at all.

With 2 of you premium, you should both abandon your Linden Homes, start a Group, both donate your 512s to the group and go and get a mainland plot that is 1120sqm with 250 prims, tier free, instead of  512sqm & 117 prims. That way you also get to choose your own house and are able to modify it.

i can't find anything anywhere in the linden home faq about this - http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Linden-Home-FAQ/ta-p/700101 - but i can't imagine it is allowed. never heard of anyone doing this. linden homes are for premium users, and the parcel controls along with the house controls are only available to the owner of the land (the person that signed up for the home). so even if it was allowed the person renting wouldn't be able to do much and so i don't think it would be much desirable.

there should be additional information about the use of linden homes inworld, though - read the covenant; world > region/estate > covenant.

eta: yeah, what peewee said, it falls under commercial use. that's what i thought, but my monday brain couldn't process :matte-motes-nerdy:

^  Agrees with Peewee. Find a nice little 1024 m or slightly larger spot, create a group together, & maximize your resources. If you find a 1024 m with the right sized micro parcel in the same region, that can work almost as well as a 1120 m parcel.

hmmm thanks guys! If anyone knows how we'd be able to get hold of that group let me know, this is my avatar name in game as well.  Only other thing I could think of was use the second house as a place to keep our dragons and horses that we're getting ready to breed.  It is allowed to keep breedables there right?
