Hello theladymaggie and welcome to SL Forums. If you get the message "DNS could not resolve host name" it is a known problem especially for users with Macs.  See https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-25627 A solution is described at the following link and seems that works for the most of the users:

http://neilrobinson.wordpress.com/2008/05/19/a-fix-for-dns-errors/

You need to add the following additional DNS servers to your DNS settings in Network settings under System Preferences:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

If it doesn't work for you, you can download an older version of viewer 2 here (suggested older than 2.6.3) and set your software updates NO to be installed automatically. (Preferences --> Setup --> Hardware)

Good luck.
