It's such a shame that one has to use external programs to create and texture sculpts and meshes to import into SL.

Why doesn't LL incorporate 3D modeling tools into the SL Viewer?

I believe there are enough open-source resources available that LL wouldn't have to worry about expending too much financial capital to incorprate 3D modeling tools into the viewer.

I can only see a turn-key viewer as a huge advatage.

Can a viewer be built with Gimp and Blender source incorporated? Has it been done? What would LL need to do on their end to make something like this happen?

Are there any groups addressing this?

Just curious.  :-)

TheBlackBox started a project some time ago that had the objective of building with prims inworld then exporting that build to an external server that processes it into a .dae file, which can be brought back into SL. He has a group inworld called Sweet Meshes dedicated to the project.

It'd be cool but a GINORMIOUS waste of resources on LL's part. It wouldn't really be practical either, seeing as there are already multiple external programs that could do it faster, better, and easier than something LL threw together. The amoutn of upkeep it would need would suck LL dry, SL would have to shift from being a virrual world to a 3d modeling app.

We have declined to implement direct editing of meshes, textures, sculpties, animations, sounds, or music into the viewer for a number of reasons.

Part of the issue is the way our asset storage works. The larger issue, however, is that the viewer and its functions are already very complex. And editors for each of these assets are equally complex, especially the ones that provide a lot of powerful options to create high quality content. 3D modelers in particular tend to involve large teams working for years to create a powerful product with sufficient functionality to do serious 3D modeling.

We have basic primitive-based modelling in the viewer today, but anything more complicated than that would take a huge development effort to either implement our own, or integrate an opensource package. It would cause our viewer and its interface to get massively more complex, would be very difficult to maintain properly and keep up to date.

And for each of these functions, there is a range of freely available professional-grade tools for creating each of these types of assets. In short, we have plenty of other things we need to focus on!

Thanks for the suggestion though!
